First Half Run Leads Tartans to 22-Point Victory at Home Against Penn State Behrend

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball, ranked 18th nationally, defeated Penn State Behrend on Monday, November 18 at the Highmark Center for Health, Wellness and Athletics by an 84-62 score. The Tartans are now 3-1 while the Lions move to 2-1. 

How It Happened

  • Senior Nolan Casey opened scoring for the Tartans in the first minute of the game with a layup, assisted by graduate student R.J. Holmes.
  • After The Tartans went up 7-0, the Lions made a three-point jump shot that fueled at 12-point run.
  • The Tartans would retake the lead at 15-14 on a layup by senior Lucas Pavlounis before the team's traded baskets leading to a 21-21 tie.
  • The Tartans unleased a 17-2 run over 4:51 to lead 38-23 with the run ending on a three-pointer by senior Aidan Murphy with 2:10 to play in the first half. After a Behrend basket, Murphy drained another triple and the Tartans would go on to lead 43-26 at halftime.
  • A steal by Allen led to a jump shot by Holmes to open the scoring in the second half. 
  • The second half was littered with back-to-back shots between the Lions and the Tartans, including a dunk by Casey. 
  • The Tartans kept their lead throughout the whole second half of the game, going up 26 points with ten minutes left after a three-point shot by sophomore Isaac Higgs. 

Tartan Stats

  • Allen led the team offensively with 22 points in 28 minutes, while also grabbing six rebounds and five steals.
  • Holmes led defensively with ten rebounds, five assists and two blocks, with also scoring 18 points for his 24th career double-double.
  • Junior Buckley DeJardin hit three from long range and finished with 15 points.

Lion Stats

  • Matthew McDonough led the team with 17 points
  • Isaac DeGregorio was the only other Lion in double figures with 10 points.
  • Tommy DiRienzo led with seven rebounds.
