Brandeis men race past Colby-Sawyer 91-75

BOSTON, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's basketball team got a double-double from senior Toby Harris (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) with 23 points and 11 rebounds, plus a 20-point game from first-year Elias Rodl (Berlin, Germany/ Schulund Leistungssportzentrum Berlin) as the Judges defeated Colby-Sawyer College, 91-75, at UMass Boston as part of the Black Coaches Classic today.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Colby-Sawyer got off to a fast start against the Judges, taking a 16-7 lead less than seven minutes into the contest on a jumper by Michael Joanou.
  • Over the next five minutes, Brandeis took control as they outscored the Chargers 25-6. Rodl had 10 points in the string, while Harris added seven. A Rodl trifecta gave the Judges a 32-22 lead with 8:25 to go in the stanza.
  • The Brandeis lead would extend as large as 18 points on a lay-up by senior Sam Adusei (Worcester, Mass./St. George's School) with 4:38 remaining that made it 43-25.
  • The Chargers closed out the half with 14 of the last 21 points to close with 50-39 at the break.
  • An Elijah Thomas 3-pointer opened the second half to get CSC within single digits at 50-42, and they were still within nine points after an Allen Mutiganzi free throw at the 15:47 mark.
  • Brandeis scored the game's next eight points, with four different players contributing buckets to push the lead back to 17 at 62-45 with 13:44 on the clock after a hoop by junior Matthew Cadogan (Weston, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas).
  • Brandeis would take its first 20-point lead on a Jake Bender (Scituate, R.I./St. George's School) 3-pointer with 10:11 remaining. The Chargers would get no closer than 13 points the rest of the way.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Harris recorded his first double-double of the season and the sixth of his career with 23 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Harris hit 10-of-13 from the field, 1-of-2 from 3-point range and 2-of-3 from the line. It was the 14th career game with 20 or more points for Harris.
  • Rodl notched his first collegiate 20-point game with 7-of-10 from the field, 2-of-2 from beyond the arc and 4-of-4 from the line. He also grabbed eight rebounds.
  • Adusei finished with 15 points with three assists and three steals.
  • Junior guard Ethan Edwards (Brooklyn, N.Y./Woodstock Acad.) had a fine all-around game with five points, six rebounds, game-high four assists and three steals.
  • Brandeis dominated the rebounds, 41-23, including 8-4 on the offensive glass that they turned into a 19-8 advantage in second-chance points. The Judges also had a 48-32 advantage in points in the paint and 61-26 in bench points.
  • CSC's Chaz Cullum led all players with 24 points, while Jouanou had 13 points and Cha'Mar Martin added 10. Mutiganzi led the Chargers with five rebounds and three assists.
  • With the win, Brandeis has scored more than 90 points in back-to-back games for the first time since the 2013-14 season.
