WLC Sprints Past North Park Behind Balanced Attack

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) - Graduate forward Ryan Broeckel (Chilton, Wis.) scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, leading six players in double figures, as 15th-ranked Wisconsin Lutheran College sprinted past North Park 114-81 on Wednesday at Time of Grace Center.

The Warriors (2-0), who won their 17th straight home game on Catalyst Court, led wire-to-wire in their first matchup with the Vikings in 11 years.

WLC jumped out to an 11-2 lead after making four of its first five shots, including three-pointers from graduate Jacob Stoltz (Kewaskum, Wis.), senior AJ Vos (Lombard, Ill.), and graduate Jacob Hefle (Germantown, Wis.). Both teams exchanged baskets, and Wisconsin Lutheran held a 15-8 lead with 15:30 remaining in the half. A 13-2 run from the Warriors sparked by five points from Stoltz put the hosts up 37-15 with just under seven minutes to play in the first half. NPU slowly trimmed its deficit down to 15 points, as WLC carried a 48-33 advantage into the break. Broeckel finished the opening half with 17 points.

North Park continued to hang around in the second half, maintaining its 15-point deficit with 16 minutes left. The Vikings worked their deficit down to 12, but pairs of free throws from Vos and Hefle put Wisconsin Lutheran back in front by 16 with 13 minutes to play. A 14-3 scoring run, paced by six points from freshman Lucas Anamndu (Buffalo Grove, Ill.), extended the Warriors' lead to 92-67. A three from junior Ja'Quell Chisom (Milwaukee, Wis.) eclipsed the century mark, and a free throw from freshman Sam Hans (Hartland, Wis.) gave the team a game-high 37-point lead with less than a minute left.

Broeckel paced six players in double figures, scoring 24 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, both game highs, along with five assists. Stoltz finished with 23 points. Vos and Chisom both had 14. Graduate Grayson Goetz (Aurora, Ill.) chipped in 13 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Hefle added 10 points and six rebounds. WLC, which scored 60 points in the paint, shot 58 percent (40-for-69) from the floor while knocking down 9 of 18 attempts from beyond the arc. Wisconsin Lutheran went 25-for-29 from the charity stripe for 86.2 percent. 

Rico Powell scored a game-high 20 points to lead three players in double figures for the Vikings (0-1), who shot 40.8 percent (29-for-71) for the game.
