Historic Men's Basketball Season Ends at No. 1 Hampden-Sydney in NCAA Championship Second Round

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. | The Farmingdale State College men's basketball team saw one of the best seasons in school history come to an end Saturday night in the second round of the 2024 NCAA Division III Championship, as it dropped a 72-51 decision at top-ranked Hampden-Sydney College.

FSC's 27-3 record on the season sets the school record for single-season winning percentage (.900), and is tied for the most victories in a season with the 2008-09 squad that advanced to the national quarterfinals. The Rams advanced to the second round for the fourth time in eight NCAA appearances, and their first since the 2012 campaign.

"I thought we played hard overall" said Farmingdale State head coach Brendan Twomey. "When you play against a team like Hampden-Sydney, the No. 1 team in the country, you want to give your best effort. (This game) does not take away from the season that we had."

"This season was definitely something special," said senior guard Aaron Davis (Valley Stream, N.Y.), who along with classmates Nick Hurowitz (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) and Corey Powell (Valley Stream, N.Y.) made up the program's first instance of having three, 1,000 career point scorers on the floor at the same time. "With the record that we had, and on a team that had a lot of chemistry -- it was very special."

The host Tigers (28-2) advance to next Friday's Round of 16, where it will face Rowan University at a site and time to be determined.

Farmingdale State used six-straight points to lead 9-5 less than six minutes into the game, behind a pair of mid-range baskets by Powell. Powell's pull-up jumper broke a 9-all tie with 11:43 remaining, before Hampden-Sydney ripped off a 15-0 run to lead by 13 (24-11) with 7:35 to go in the half. After a lay-in by Rams' sophomore point guard Michael Notias (Manhasset, N.Y.) and dunk by freshman forward Kentrell Evans (Brooklyn, N.Y.) pulled the Rams to within a 27-16 count with 5:16 left, the Tigers finished on a 22-4 run to hold a 49-20 lead at halftime.

FSC outscored the Tigers by a 31-23 margin in the second half, and were able to close to within 19 points, at 70-51, on a 3-pointer with 1:32 on the clock by senior Kamani Jones (Baldwin, N.Y.). The Rams' defense limited the Tigers to 8-of-33 (.242) shooting in the latter period.

Hurowitz (eight rebounds) tied for the game-high with 13 points, and finishes his career ranked No. 5 on the school's all-time scoring list at 1,298; he passed by current Rams assistant coach George Riefenstahl (2015-19; 1,291) with his output against the Tigers.

Davis added 11 points on the night to finish his four-year Division III career (including the 2019-20 season at SUNY Geneseo) with 1,075 points, while Powell (eight pts., six reb.) rounds out his career No. 7 on FSC's all-time list with 1,198 points.
