Milton Sets Scoring Record; Wolves Top Alfred to Close Regular Season

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — A free throw in the first half gave Devin Milton (Opelousas, La. / Beau Chene) 1,549 career points as he set a new Keuka College career record. The Wolves edged out Alfred University 44-41 on Saturday to close the regular season.

With the win, Keuka College (11-12, 9-7 Empire 8) will host Alfred University in the first round of the Empire 8 Tournament on Tuesday night.

Milton finished with 16 points to lead the Wolves. Christian Sage (Owego, N.Y. / Owego Free Academy) added 15 and Mason VanDeMortel (Newark, N.Y. / Newark) collected seven rebounds.

Keuka College 44 vs. Alfred University 41

The Wolves came out strong on defense, holding Alfred to just a layup and free throw over the first 10 minutes of play. During that time, the Wolves built a 17-3 lead with three-pointers by Milton, VanDeMortel, and Daniel Obunse (Queens, N.Y. / Flushing). The Wolves remained ahead when Devin Milton made the first of two free throws with 1:36 left in the half to set the scoring record. The half concluded with a jumper by Christian Sage at the buzzer to give the Wolves a 24-14 lead at the half.

Coming out in the second half, Alfred continued to work the ball from distance in an effort to get back into the game. A three cut the lead to six at 28-22. The lead would later be cut down to three, but the Green and Gold bounced back to extend the margin to as many as nine. A 6-0 run by the Saxons down the stretch cut it to a two-point game, 43-41, with 40 seconds remaining. The Saxons got a block against Keuka to gain possession with nine seconds on the clock. They worked the ball down the left wing, but Alijah Ellis (Portsmouth, Va. / Indian River / Fork Union Military Academy) intercepted a pass and was fouled with 0.6 seconds remaining. Ellis made the first but missed the second. Jaden Keasey (Newport News, Va. / Menchville) was there for the offensive rebound as the clock expired on a 44-41 victory.

  • The Wolves improve to 9-19 all-time against Alfred and 5-9 at home.
  • The 14 points allowed in the first half tied for the fewest allowed in a half in program history. 41 total points allowed is the third-fewest ever
  • Keuka College's 44 points were the fewest ever in a win in program history
  • Milton also broke a tie for fourth on the career steals list, swiping the 167th of his career
  • Mason VanDeMortel hit a three for the Wolves. He moved into a tie for sixth with 55 in his career
  • Keuka College finishes the regular season with 11 wins and nine conference wins, the most since the 2017-18 season
  • The fourth-place finish by the Wolves is the best for the Green and Gold in the Empire 8 era

Up Next for Keuka College: Up next for Keuka College is the Empire 8 Tournament for the second time in the four-year history of Keuka College in the conference. It will be a rematch of today as the Wolves host Alfred University in the 4/5 game in the first round of the tournament. It is the first home playoff game for the Wolves since the Green and Gold hosted Cazenovia College in the 2015 North Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament.
