HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Emory jumped out early, taking a 13-5 lead on a pair of free throws by Cale Martens with just over five minutes elapsed.
  • The Judges scored the next five points, tying the game at 15 after a 3-pointer from sophomore Ethan Edwards (Brooklyn, N.Y./Woodstock Acad.) and a Cadogan jumper.
  • The Eagles took their last lead with 10:56 left in the first half on a bucket by Jair Knight.
  • Brandeis answered on the next possession when Cadogan connected from downtown to give the Judges an 18-17 advantage with 10:36 on the clock.
  • The Judges would never trail again. They held Emory without a field goal over the next seven-and-a-half minutes, outscoring them 14-1 over that span.
  • Junior Gilbert Otoo (Burtonsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) hit a 3-pointer with 3:43 left in the stanza to give Brandeis their largest lead of the first 20 minutes, 32-18, with 3:43 to go in the first half.
  • Emory rallied and closed the period on an 11-3 string to get with in six on a Ben Pearce lay-up that made it 35-29.
  • Cadogan established his career-best with 10 points in the first half, while Edwards had eight.
  • Pearce had 12 and Martens 10 before the break for Emory.
  • The Judges started out strong in the second half, opening on a 19-8 run that was capped by 3-pointers on three-straight possessions, two by Otoo and another by sophomore Quron Zene (Windsor, Conn./IMG Academy). Otoo's second made it 54-37 in favor of the visitors with 14:08 to go.
  • Brandeis was able to keep the Eagles at arm's length, but the hosts got the deficit back to within single digits at the 10:37 mark on an AJ Harris 3-pointer.
  • Emory clawed even closer, making it a one-possession game on a three-point play by Knight at the 6:37 mark, while a Max Fried put-back with 5:34 to go made it a one-point game at 58-57.
  • After four straights stops, Otoo and Knight traded 3-pointers, making it 61-60 in favor of the Judges with 3:50 left.
  • Cadogan answered with his only field goal of the second half after an Otoo offensive rebound with 3:01 to go, making it a 63-60 lead for Brandeis.
  • Both defenses buckled down from that point, as the teams went eight-straight possessions without scoring. The Eagles had a chance to cut into the lead as the clock wound under a minute, but they were whistled for a moving screen with 48 second left.
  • Starting on the next possession, Cadogan did his job from the line, hitting eight free throws in a row.
  • The Judges were unable to pull away, however, as Emory answered on the other end, including a four-point possession with the shot clock off. With a 69-63 deficit and 27 seconds left, Ben Pearce hit his first free throw, but missed the second. The Eagles missed their first attempt at a 3-pointer, but got another offensive rebound and Albert Fallas made his second attempt with 16 seconds to go, getting the home team within 69-67.
  • Cadogan and Peace traded free throws, but Emory got a break when the Judges missed their last two foul shots with 3.5 seconds to go and the two-point lead. The Eagles couldn't come up with a play to tie the contest, allowing Brandeis to escape with the win.
