Conn College Cruises Past Colby

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's basketball team coasted to an 81-53 victory over Colby College on Sunday afternoon in NESCAC action at Luce Field House.

The Camels 49 percent from the floor—a season high in conference action—and had 10 players contribute points on the day. Five finished in double figures, led by RJ Casey (Brentwood, Tenn.) with 21 points on 7-for-13 shooting that included three treys.

Cam Schainfeld (Newton, Mass.) finished with 12 points, four rebounds and three steals while Elias Espinosa (Leonia, N.J.) chipped in 11 points and three boards. David Murray (Jackson Heights, N.Y.) added a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds to go with three assists and two blocks, and Dylan Watson (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) came off the bench to supply 10 points and six caroms.

Conn picked up its 15th win of the season and improved to 5-1 in league play. The 15 wins are the most in a season since 2007-08, and the last time the Camels started 5-1 in NESCAC action was 1999-00.

Colby came out hot at the start and looked primed to give the Camels trouble. Max Poulton scored 11 points in the opening 6:43 of the contest, and the Mules connected on five of their first seven attempts from long range to keep pace with Conn.

The turning point came with 11:23 left in the half, when Henry Westrich tied the game at 21-21 with a three-point play that resulted in Murray's second foul. Conn's big man took a seat on the bench, and the Camels looked susceptible without their leading scorer on the floor.

Instead, Casey took over the reins on the offensive end as the Camels outscored the Mules 21-7 the remainder of the half. He netted eight of his 10 first-half points during the stretch, which left the Camels with a 42-28 lead at the break. Colby also cooled down from the outside, missing its final nine three-point attempts of the half.

Conn's offense kept humming in the second half as a pair of threes by Casey extended the lead to 52-32. The Camels shot nearly 55 percent in the stanza and led by as many 31 before calling off the dogs.

Alex Mitchell (Roxbury, Mass.) gave the Camels a boost with some big minutes off the bench, especially in the first half with Murray on the sideline. He finished with four points, two rebounds, one assist, one steal and a block in nine minutes of action.

Poulton finished with 16 points and six rebounds to pace the Mules, who dropped to 9-10 overall (1-5 NESCAC). Marcos Montiel added 13 points to round out the Colby players in double figures.

Conn (15-5 overall, 5-1 NESCAC) will next host Amhest College on Friday, February 2 at 7:00 p.m..
