Miller Earns 300th Career Win, USJ Scores Program-Record 123 Points at Mitchell

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Head coach Glen Miller earned his 300th career victory as the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's basketball team scored a program-record 123 points in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) win, 123-65, on the road at Mitchell College Wednesday night inside the Yarnall Athletic Center in New London, Conn. With the triumph, the Blue Jays extend their win streak to seven games, improve to 15-4 overall on the 2023-24 season, and remain perfect in GNAC play at 8-0. Conversely, Mitchell drops to 5-13 overall and 2-5 in conference games with the setback.

Senior guard Tyree Mitchell (East Hartford, Conn.) scored a game-high 21 points to lead six Blue Jays who finished in double figures on the evening. Mitchell connected on 8-of-10 attempts from the field, including a perfect 4-of-4 from beyond the arc, as USJ shot 44-of-65 (67.7%) overall, 17-of-29 (58.6%) from three, and 18-of-21 (85.7%) from the free-throw line as a team. The 17 made three-point field goals against the Mariners matched the program record for threes in a single game.

Junior guard Kevin Cummings (Portsmouth, N.H.) joined Mitchell in double figures with a season-high 17 points off the bench. Sophomore guard Lence Altenor (Everett, Mass.) poured in 16 points and senior forward Jalen Samuels (Franklin, Mass.) added 14, while senior forward Neill Dickey (Atlanta, Ga.) netted a career-high 12 points off the bench, as USJ's bench outscored Mitchell's 55-8 in the contest. Sophomore forward Friedrich Feldrappe (Berlin, Germany) chipped in with 11 points and a game-high six rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Samuels scored the first seven points of the ballgame followed by a driving layup from Feldrappe, as the Blue Jays raced out to a fast 9-0 lead 1:45 into the contest and forced a Mitchell timeout.
  • The Mariners got on the board coming out of the stoppage via a layup by junior guard Jaylyn Clardy (Pensacola, Fla.), but the Blue Jays countered with an 11-2 run that featured back-to-back-to-back threes on three-straight possessions followed by a senior guard Chaylyn Martin (Hartford, Conn.) layup, to generate a 20-4 lead and force another quick Mitchell timeout.
  • USJ built off its early 11-2 spurt and extended it to a 27-6 run to manufacture a 27-point lead (35-8) with 11:25 remaining on the first-half time and never looked back.
  • The hot-shooting Blue Jays made it a 31-point game (44-13) after a Cummings layup with eight minutes left in the half, and then extended their lead to as large 44 (68-24) following a Tyree Mitchell three with just over a minute to go until the break, before taking a 70-28 advantage into the locker rooms.
  • Saint Joseph picked up right where they left off and outscored Mitchell 13-5 over the opening 3:14 of the second stanza to push its lead out to 50 (83-33). Tyree Mitchell scored nine of USJ's 13 points to start the final frame via two three-pointers and an old-fashioned three-point play.
  • The Blue Jays maintained their 50-point gap for the majority of the final half on their way to their third-largest margin of victory in program history, 123-65.
