BALTIMORE, MD – Junior John Windley scored 20 points to lead the Johns Hopkins men's basketball team to a 74-61 win over McDaniel Thursday night in Goldfarb Gym. The Blue Jays extend their win streak to 12 games as they improve to 14-4 overall and 10-1 in the Centennial Conference. The Green Terror slip to 7-11 on the season, including 2-9 in the conference.
It was a back-and-forth affair early as visitors kept Hopkins within arm's reach. It was a four-point game at 15-11 with 11 minutes left in the half when the Blue Jays got a three-point play from freshman Jeb Williams and a triple from junior Brian Johansson to go up 10 just 90 seconds later. The Green Terror answered with an 8-2 spurt, capped by a Jahdel Darego layup to cut the deficit back to four at the 6:48-mark.
Graduate student Carson James got a bucket in the paint to spark a 10-2 run as Hopkins pushed out to a 33-22 lead. Johansson put the punctuation on the run with a basket from downtown with 2:20 to go in the half. The teams traded scores over the remainder of the half and it was 37-29 Blue Jays at the break.
McDaniel opened the second with a 6-3 spurt to pull within five on a Lorin Hall jumper. Windley answered on the other end with a step-back jumper to ignite a 10-0 to Hopkins to a 50-35 lead with 15:44 on the clock. The Green Terror weren't going away and responded with a 9-2 run to pull back within eight.
James halted the run with a three-pointer and then Windley turned a Green Terror turnover into two points and just like that the lead was 13. That kick-started a 17-5 run that saw Hopkins' lead swell to 20 points at the 4:22-mark. Six different players scored during the run, which was capped by another Windley trey. That would do it as Hopkins would go on to win 74-61.
Windley went 8-of-11 from the field, including 3-of-4 from downtown for 20 points. It is his fourth 20-point game of the season. He also grabbed seven rebounds and handed our four assists. Johansson and freshman Brayden Fagbemi scored 13 points apiece and Fagbemi also had a game-high eight rebounds. James also finished in double digits with 11 points. Chuck Contee led the Green Terror with a game-high 27 points and eight rebounds. Hall was the only other McDaniel player in double figures with 11 points.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, January 26 as the Blue Jays visit the Ursinus Bears. Tip-off at Helfferich Hall is slated for 3:00 pm.
