Bates men's basketball breaks program record for made three-pointers in one game, Bobcats defeat MMA 94-68

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates men's basketball team made 21 three-pointers on Tuesday, breaking a program record that had stood for more than 30 years, in a 94-68 win over Maine Maritime Academy at Alumni Gym.

The Bobcats (3-15) hit 21-48 from long range in the victory, led by sophomore Elliott Cravitz (Denver, Colo.), who made a career-high seven on 11 attempts from deep. The previous Bates men's basketball program record for made threes in one game was 19, first set during the 1990-91 season against Thomas College, and later matched in 2015-16 against UMaine-Farmington.

Junior Lincoln Rybeck (South Glastonbury, Conn.) hit the record-breaking three-pointer from the left wing with 7:04 remaining in regulation, giving the Bobcats 20 on the night. Later, senior Stephen Ward (Boston) hit the first three-pointer of his career, and the 21st made three of the evening for Bates, on a shot from the corner that put the Bobcats up 90-58 with 4:36 left.

First-year Marc Begin II (Jacksonville, Fla.) led all scorers with 25 points on 10-16 shooting. He hit 5-8 from three-point range and dished out a game-high five assists. Cravitz finished with 21 points and six rebounds. Senior captain Simon McCormick (Whitefield, Maine) had a big game, tallying 15 points on 5-6 shooting from long range. Senior Trace Gotham (Medfield, Mass.) also finished in double figures scoring with 10 points on 4-8 shooting and seven rebounds.

Bates never trailed in the victory. A Cravitz three-pointer with 18:59 left in the first half put the Bobcats ahead of the Mariners (7-10) for good. Still only up 12-8 with 14:16 left until halftime, the Bobcats rained threes down on MMA, starting with Cravitz, and continuing with Begin II and McCormick. Before fans could blink, Bates led 21-8 with 12:31 on the clock.

The Bobcats tallied an impressive 55 points in the first half, shooting 19-37 (51.4%) out of the gate. They led by 24 points at halftime.

Curt Heinz paced the visitors with 22 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. No other Mariner finished in double figures scoring, and Bates held MMA to just 2-16 from three-point range.

The Bobcats look to keep the momentum going Friday when they host Middlebury in NESCAC action at 7pm.
