Late Run Fuels Johns Hopkins 72-56 Win at Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The 24th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's basketball team got 17 points from junior John Windley and a double double from Sidney Thybulle in a 72-56 win at Mary Washington Monday night. The Blue Jays extend their win streak to 11 as they improve to 13-4 on the season, while the Eagles slip to 9-7.

Playing against a defense ranked ninth in the nation in scoring, it took a little longer than normal, but Hopkins finally put together one of its methodical runs. Leading 51-46 with 7:10 to go, a Thybulle layup sparked an 18-3 run that saw the Jays' lead balloon to 20 at 69-49 less than six minutes later. Six different players scored during the run, which was fueled by back-to-back triples from Windley. That run would seal it as Hopkins would go on to win 72-56.

The final score was not indicative of the tightness of this game for the first 32 minutes. Mary Washington jumped out to an early 10-2 lead before a Jeb Williams' trey ignited a 15-1 run that spanned nearly nine minutes. Windley capped the run with the first of his three triples on the night to put JHU up 17-11. The teams traded buckets over the remainder of the half and the Blue Jays took a 33-29 lead into the break.

The back-and-forth affair continued in the second half, as Hopkins could not push its lead to more than seven points until that late game-changing run.

Windley finished with the game-high 17 points, while Thybulle was the only other Blue Jay to finish in double figures with 13 points. He also grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds to post his second double double of the season. Windley was second on the team with eight rebounds, to go with a pair of steals. Zack Blue led the Eagles with 13 points while Dorian Davis chipped in 10. Daniel Peterson had a team-high seven rebounds and added seven points.

Hopkins returns to Centennial Conference play on Thursday, January 25 as the Blue Jays host the McDaniel Green Terror. Tip-off at Goldfarb Gym is slated for 8:00 pm.

Notes: Thybulle now ranks ninth in JHU history with 566 career rebounds and 12th with 335 defensive rebounds • Windley moved into 18th place with 104 three-point field goals • JHU's 11-game win streak is the eighth double-digit win streak in program history, and third in the last four seasons.
