Westminster takes down previously unbeaten Saint Vincent

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Behind terrific individual performances by sophomores Trey DePietro (Boardman, Ohio, Boardman) and Quincy Jones (Youngstown, Ohio, Chaney), the Westminster College men's basketball team largely controlled previously unbeaten Saint Vincent College in Saturday's 90-80 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

Westminster improved to 8-9 overall and 6-7 in the PAC. Saint Vincent fell to 17-1 overall and 12-1 in the league. The Bearcats won 78-64 in Latrobe on Nov. 18.

DePietro led five Westminster players in double figures Saturday with a game-high 20 points. He scored 12 in the second half. DePietro went 7-of-11 from the floor and 6-of-7 from the free throw line and finished with nine rebounds and season-high four blocked shots. Jones scored 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting and added seven rebounds.

Senior Reese Leone (Beloit, Ohio, West Branch) added 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting and went 4-of-5 from the free throw line. He chipped in with four assists and four rebounds. Sophomore Mick Hergenrother (Canfield, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney) finished with a career-high 17 points to go along with six rebounds in 28 reserve minutes. He went 4-of-8 from the floor, 2-of-3 from three-point field goal range and 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Sophomore Jaxon Hendershott (Salem, Ohio, West Branch) totaled 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting.

Dev Ostrowski scored 19 points and added five rebounds to lead four Saint Vincent players in double figures. Twelve of Ostrowski's points came in the second half. Osyon Jones finished with 18 points.

Ostrowski knocked down a three-pointer 38 seconds into the game to give Saint Vincent a 3-2 lead, but DePietro's layup with a minute and three seconds elapsed put Westminster up for good. Westminster's first half lead swelled to as many as 20, 33-13, when Hergenrother hit a three-pointer with just under eight minutes remaining in the half. The Titans carried a 15-point lead, 47-32, into the break.

The Westminster bench outscored the Saint Vincent reserves 12-1 in the first half. Hergenrother scored 10 of his 17 points in the first 20 minutes.

The Titans led by double figures throughout the second half. Jones' bucket with just over four remaining in regulation stretched the lead to 20, 83-63. Saint Vincent hit three three-pointers down the stretch to pull to within 12, 90-78, before Jaden Bailey's jumper with 14 seconds remaining closed out the scoring.

The 90 points scored were the most for Westminster since a 99-94 overtime loss against visiting Geneva on Feb. 8, 2023.

Westminster shot a season-best 54.4 percent (31-57) from the floor and went 24-of-28 (.857) from the free throw line. Saint Vincent shot 43.3 percent (29-67) and made 16 of its 28 (.571) free throw tries.

Westminster will host rival Grove City College Wednesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
