Early Shooting Slump Sends Knights to Loss Against RIT, 67-57

Potsdam, NY – From the start of the game, the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team looked a bit out of sync offensively as the Golden Knights were held to a season-low in scoring in suffering a 67-57 defeat at the hands of RIT Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights fell to 10-5 overall and 4-4 in the Liberty League while RIT improved to 9-6 and 5-3 in conference games. Clarkson will look to salvage the weekend when the team takes on Hobart College on Saturday afternoon.

In the opening minutes, Clarkson had trouble getting open looks and when it did happen the Knights were unable to knock down the shots. RIT opened up with a 13-0 lead before Jack Dalgety took the lid off the rim with a shot at 14:37. Clarkson would briefly get back to within single figures, but RIT went on an 8-0 run over a stretch of three minutes late in the half to push the margin to 19. Frankie Rainville buried a 3-pointer to end the streak for RIT, Clarkson's only 3-point field goal in the half, before settling for a 17-point deficit at the half.

In the first few moments of the second half, RIT doubled up the Knights and led by 22, but back-to-back 3-pointers from Steve DeRegis kept Clarkson from letting things get out of hand. The margin hovered in the teens for much of the second half, though a 3-pointer from Matthew Parent at 8:45 drew the Knights to within 12 for the first time since there was six minutes remaining in the first half. A few costly turnovers kept Clarkson from getting any closer, as RIT held at least a 12-point lead for all of the second half, save for a late steal and layup from Frankie Rainville at the buzzer.

Clarkson's 57 points were the fewest the team has scored in the 2023-24, seven less than in a win posted over RPI in December. Clarkson also went to the line just eight times in the game, which was one less than the team's previous season-low in made free throws in a game (nine).

Rainville finished with 12 points for Clarkson, going 5-for-7 from the floor, and Jack Dalgety tossed in 10 points with eight rebounds and four blocked shots. Braeden Burns and Ryan Miles-Ferguson each scored nine in the game.

For RIT, Keegan Ocorr was 7-for-12 from the field for 19 points and Chase Dickens also added 19 points. Josiah Turner had a double-double on 11 points and 10 rebounds.
