The Guilford College men's basketball team continued their away conference trip in Virginia in Harrisonburg, facing off against Eastern Mennonite. Despite a slow first half showing, the Quakers' offense erupted in the second period, en route to a commanding 83-49 victory.
GC jumped to an early 7-0 lead, six of those points scored by Caleb Farrish. The Royals replied with a few baskets of their own, but the away team had all of the momentum halfway through the first half in a low scoring affair (18-9). Gabe Proctor was automatic from beyond the arc so far, with three makes (11:03).
EMU rallied slightly, but GC maintained their advantage, going into halftime with a 10-point lead (32-22). Julius Burch crashed the boards, in double digits through 20 minutes of play. Both teams struggled to make shots consistently, in part to 13 combined turnovers, while shooting under 34% in the first half.
After a scoreless first 1:30 in the second period, Tyler Dearman kicked off the scoring with a three. He then scored a layup not long after to help extend GC's lead to 13 (14:54). From this point on, the Quaker offense found their stride over the next 10 minutes of play. A dominant 28-7 run, including six of eight three-point makes, ballooned Guilford's lead to 30 with 5:29 left.
The visiting squad rode their excellent second half shooting to their fourth straight win, 83-49. In the second half alone, GC scored 51 points, making 20-32 field goals (62.5), and shooting almost perfect from the three-point line (10-13, 76.9%). The visiting team's defense hindered the Royals throughout the game, going just 32.1% from the field (17-53).
Dearman led the Quakers in scoring with 19 points. Proctor finished his fine shooting night with 18 points, including six threes. Julius Burch clobbered his way to 15 rebounds, to go along with five points and five assists.
Guilford heads back home to Greensboro for a three-game homestand, welcoming Randolph to Ragan-Brown Field House to kick off a three-game home stand on Wednesday, January 10. Tip off is set for 7:00 p.m.
