Emory Snaps Five-Game CNU Winning Streak with 86-70 Victory

ATLANTA, Ga. - Emory University registered an 86-70 victory over the Captains of Christopher Newport University Wednesday at Woodruff Physical Education Center. The loss snapped a five-game CNU winning streak, and the 20th-ranked Captains are now 12-4 on the season.

Emory, ranked 22nd, improved to 9-2 as the Eagles had four of their five starters in double figures. Senior All-American Jahn Hines led the Captains with 21 points, and freshman Toa Hollenbeck matched his career high with a 20-point effort.

"Emory is obviously a really solid program, and they did a lot of good things today to beat us," Head Coach John Krikorian said. "I thought we played really hard, did a good job on the boards, and didn't turn it over much. We gave them a really good battle, we just weren't able to do enough at a few key points to get ahead."

The Captains held their only lead of the game, 6-5, three minutes into the opening half. The Eagles went on to open a 12-point advantage, only to see the Captains battle back to cut the lead to six at halftime, 41-35. Emory opened the second half by scoring the first seven points, and surged to an 18-point lead, 65-47, midway through the second stanza. CNU then battled from behind, going on a 13-3 run to cut the lead to eight, 68-60, with 6:24 to play. The Eagles would rally and put the game away with a 12-2 run over the next three minutes to push the lead back to 18 en route to the 16-point final verdict.

Hines, who had scored a career-high 39 points on Monday in a 76-71 CNU victory at Berry College to open the two-game Georgia trip, posted six rebounds to go with his game-high 21 points. Hines is now just two points shy of Tim Daly for 18th place on CNU's all-time scoring list.

Freshman Hasan Hammad led Christopher Newport on the boards with seven rebounds, as Emory ended up out-rebounding the Captains, 40-38, for the day.The Eagles made 59 percent of their shots (32 of 54) for the afternoon, while the Captains were 26 of 78 from the floor (33 percent).

Sophomore Ben Pearce led Emory with 22 points, while junior Logan Shanahan scored 14 points and registered nine rebounds.

The game was just the second meeting ever of the programs, and the Eagles have now won both games in the series. The Eagles recorded a 92-90 victory over the Captains at the Freeman Center in 2013 in the first game.

Christopher Newport now has a week to prepare for another road game, as the Captains will play at Marymount University next Wednesday night. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
