Case Western Reserve University graduate student guard Anthony Mazzeo scored 20 points and graduate student guard Preston Maccoux and junior guard Sam Trunley each added 16 points apiece as the eighth-ranked Spartans remained undefeated with an 83-65 win over Adrian College in Adrian, Michigan on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans now stand at 7-0 on the season and have won 27 straight games against non-conference opponents during the regular season. The Bulldogs fell to 0-8 on the campaign with the loss.
Mazzeo shot eight-of-13 from the floor, including one-of-three from long range, and dished out a team-high four assists in the win. Maccoux's season-high point total came on a five-of-nine shooting effort, including a pair of threes, to go along with five rebounds. Trunley notched his third-straight double-figure scoring effort off the bench, connecting on five-of-10 shots overall, including three-of-five long-range attempts. A game removed from reaching the 1,000-point milestone for his career, graduate student forward Colin Kahl fell just a point shy of a double-double with nine points and a career-high 12 rebounds.
Ten of Maccoux's 16 points came in the first half of the game, as he helped the Spartans take a nine-point lead by halftime. CWRU started the game hot, taking a 7-0 lead in the first minute on a pair of layups from senior guard Luke Thorburn and a three by junior forward Umar Rashid. The Spartans remained ahead until 14:43 left, when Adrian went ahead 11-10 as part of a 10-1 run that saw the Bulldogs go ahead by a game-high three points with just under 14 minutes left in the half. CWRU began to pull away later in the first half, as Maccoux capped off a 13-2 Spartan run with a pair of free throws to give the Spartans a 37-24 lead with 3:55 remaining in the period, and a three by Trunley with just over a minute left in the frame gave CWRU a 40-31 edge heading into halftime.
CWRU maintained a double-digit lead for most of the second half of the game. The team's lead ballooned to 17 points with 14:59 to play in the game after Mazzeo converted an and-one to put CWRU in front 53-36. The Bulldogs were able to trim the Spartans' lead down to as few as six points, cutting the score to 69-63 with 4:52 to play. However, the CWRU defense locked down and did not allow another basket until the closing seconds of the game, while going on a 14-0 run to take a game-high 20-point lead by the final minute and lock down the win.
Mazzeo scored 14 points in the second half to lead all CWRU players with Trunley adding 10 over the final 20 minutes of the game. The Spartans shot 51.9% as a team in the second half and 48.2% overall for the game. CWRU outrebounded Adrian 36-25, including a 10-2 edge in offensive rebounds that led to a 14-0 advantage for the Spartans in second-chance points. Led by the 32 combined points from Maccoux and Trunley, the CWRU bench outscored Adrian's 37-20 on Saturday.
