ASHLAND, Va. -- Senior team captain Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) scored a game-high and season-high 16 points, and fifth-year Ryan Clements (Conyers, GA) added 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists, to lead nationally-ranked No. 7 Hampden-Sydney College to a 61-52 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) road win at four-time defending ODAC Tournament Champion and archrival Randolph-Macon College on Friday night in Ashland. The visiting Tigers (6-1, 2-1 ODAC) led 28-19 at halftime against the host Yellow Jackets (5-3, 2-1 ODAC), and secured their first win against their archrivals since 2017 (12 games)—and first road win in Ashland since 2013—with 10-10 free throws over the final 3:20. Jabril Robinson and Amr Areikat each scored 15 points for R-MC, who had its 37-game ODAC winning streak stopped, as well as a 57-game regular season home win-streak.
"We played with the type of grit and togetherness that we know we are capable of tonight," said fifth-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "The beauty is that this group has so much more to give. Proud of the guys for a tough road win right in the middle of exams. Roll Tigers baby!"
H-SC yielded an opening three-point field goal to Areikat of R-MC, receiving votes in the national poll, but quickly responded with 11-unanswered points to lead 11-3 at 13:29 … getting three consecutive three-pointers from senior Alex Elliott (Marietta, GA), Clements and fifth-year team captain Miles Harris (Virginia Beach), the latter off the bench, along with a layup by Elliott. Another basket in the lane from Elliott had the Tigers ahead 18-7 with 8:05 on the first-half clock, and a two-handed slam dunk by Clements off a turnover made it 20-9 at 6:37. A pair of three-pointers from Brazil sandwiched around a layup by senior team captain Josiah Hardy (Ashburn) helped the visitors take a 28-19 lead at the intermission.
The Yellow Jackets closed to within 28-23 early in the second half as Robinson scored four quick points, but senior Davidson Hubbard (Charlotte, NC) responded with a three-pointer for the Garnet & Grey to push the lead to 31-23 at 17:48. The Tigers led 36-25 after a pair of free throws by Hubbard and 1-2 at the line from fifth-year Chase Turner (Virginia Beach) with 14:47 remaining. R-MC was within 36-29 at 12:49 after another basket by Areikat, but a basket down low from Hardy and five-straight by Brazil, including a three-pointer, made it 43-29 with 11:24 left to play. H-SC still led 49-38 at 6:39 following another basket in the paint from Hardy, before the Yellow Jackets battled back to within 49-45 with 3:45 on the clock. The Tigers allowed their rivals to get no closer, securing the outcome with 10-10 free throws over the final 3:20, along with a layup by Elliott (0:41), assisted by Brazil. Clements was 6-6 at the charity stripe down the stretch, while Turner and Brazil were each 2-2 at the line.
Brazil led H-SC with his game-high and season-high 16 points, including 4-7 three-pointers. Clements finished with his 13 points (8-8 FTs), seven rebounds and four assists for the Tigers. Elliott and Hubbard each contributed nine points, with Elliott adding six rebounds and Hubbard adding seven rebound and three assists. Hardy had six points, while Turner added five points, five rebounds and a game-high four steals off the bench. H-SC shot 32% (19-60) from the field, including 40% (8-20) on three-pointers, and 88% (15-17) at the free throw line. The Tigers stopped a 12-game losing streak as their last win in the series had been on February 1, 2017 at home in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium (63-56), and the last H-SC win in Ashland had been on Feb. 6, 2013 (66-47).
Robinson and Areikat led R-MC with their respective 15 points, with Robinson adding a game-high seven assists. The Yellow Jackets shot 37% (19-52) from the field, including 23% (5-22) on three-pointers, and 82% (9-11) at the line. R-MC had won 37-straight ODAC contests dating back to a 63-54 road loss at Guilford (NC) on Feb. 22, 2020 ... along with 57-straight regular season home wins dating back to January 24, 2018 ... and had lost just two conference games since 2018-19.
H-SC will remain on the road for a non-conference game at William Peace University on Tuesday night, December 12, at 7 p.m. in Raleigh, North Carolina.
