Quakers Overcome Cold Start to Best Mary Washington

In game two of four on the road for the third-ranked Guilford College men's basketball team faced the University of Mary Washington. Despite a cold start for majority of the first half, the Quakers survived a late rally for a 65-62 win over the Eagles.

Tyler Dearman led the way for Guilford with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Five other Quakers scored on the evening.

In the opening period, both teams struggled from the field but Mary Washington (6-4) jumped out to an 8-1 lead. The lone Guilford (8-0) point came from a Dearman free throw. GC began to heat up from the floor as it rattled off six-straight points with four off the hand of Julius Burch.

The Eagles stretch their lead back to four and eventually five (14-9) after a three-point shot. The Quakers once again dropped six-in-a-row capped off by a three from Dearman late in shot clock to hand the team their first lead of the night, 15-14.

UMW recaptured the edge with a three-point play but with 26 seconds left in the half, Burch made a mid-range jumper to even the score at 17. With nine seconds on the clock, Caleb Farrish stole the ball away and was fouled for a one-and-one opportunity.

The junior from McLeansville made both of his free throws to give Guilford a 19-17 lead at the half. Over the final 14-plus minutes, the Quakers outscored the homeside 18-9.

In the second half, Guilford came out firing with a 14-2 run including an alley-oop from Rob Littlejohn to Farrish. Mary Washington slowed the run down with five-consecutive points but Luke and Gabe Proctor hit back-to-back threes to go ahead by 15 (39-24) with 10:55 left in regulation.

At this point, both teams started to find their offensive rhythm as they traded baskets. The Quakers were able to maintain a double-digit advantage and expanded it to 17 (57-40) with 3:41 on the clock.

The Eagles started to rally and scored 14 of the next 17 points. In the final 27 seconds, Littlejohn made five of his six free throw attempts to hold off the hosts as they hit a three as time expired for the final score of 65-62.

Littlejohn finished with 14 points, going 11-14 from the free throw line. Luke Proctor added 11 points with seven assists. In the second half, GC shot 60-percent (12-20) from the field while going 8-13 (61.5-percent) from distance.
