Men's Basketball: Highlanders Win in Overtime at St. Joseph's - Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, NY -  The Cairn University Men's Basketball team went to New York City, Monday night, as they took on the Bears of St. Joseph's University – Brooklyn, forcing overtime and taking the win 113-108.
 
Detailed Box Score:

  • Junior guard Jonathan Desir (Feasterville, PA / Neshaminy) led the Highlanders with 30 points on 8-11 shooting from deep and 11-15 from the floor.
  • Senior forward Derian Bradford (Lansdale, PA / University of Valley Forge) was next with another double-double of 24 points and 17 rebounds and a game-high 3 blocks.
  • Senior guard Aytor Alberto (Willemstad, Curaçao / Clarks Summit University) also scored 24.
  • Junior guard Christian Rivera (Cayey, Puerto Rico / Central Bucks East) dished out a career-high 16 assists, tying the 1977 program record for single-game assists, and zero turnovers.

How It Played Out:

  • Cairn (3-1) held an early lead while St. Joseph's University – Brooklyn (1-5) kept things close.
  • 13 first half points from senior forward Owen Bradford (Lansdale, PA / University of Valley Forge) and 3-3 shooting from deep by Desir put Cairn ahead as much as 11 in the half, leading the way for all but ten seconds of the half as the Highlanders went into the break with a 52-48 lead.
  • Alberto led the way with 15 of Cairn 43 second half points while Desir knocked down another three triples.
  • The Bears came back to outscore the Highlanders 47-43 in the frame, taking the lead with seconds remaining until Desir made a layup to force overtime, tied up at 95-95.
  • St. Joseph's held the lead for only 25 seconds of overtime as Cairn went on a seven-point run and secured the 113-108 victory.

Game Notes:

  • Derian Bradford collected his 3rd double-double of the season.
  • Rivera ties Leon Wesolowski's single-game assists record, set back on January 17, 1977 against Baptist Bible College (now Clarks Summit University).
