MBB: Panthers storm past Maine Maritime

 

PLYMOUTH, N.H. The Plymouth State University men's basketball team defeated the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners in a non-conference game, 73-58, in Foley Gymnasium Tuesday evening.

After finding themselves tied at 51-51 midway through the second half, the Panthers locked down defensively and held the Mariners to only one field goal in the final nine minutes of play.  Plymouth State closed out on a 22-7 run to earn the team's fourth win of the season.

Three Panthers ended in double-digits, as senior Kyler Bosse (Manchester, N.H.) led all scorers with 23 points, while sophomore Torran Bosworth (Springfield, Mass.) added 16 points of his own. Junior Elijah Swanson (Meredith, N.H.) recorded 13 points in the winning effort for the Panthers.

Bosse extends his career point total to 961, scoring 20+ points in all five games this season, as his pursuit to join the PSU 1,000-point club draws closer by each game.

The Panthers improve to 4-1 on the season, while Maine Maritime falls to 3-3.

How it Happened:

  • The Panthers jumped out to an early five-point lead (8-3) with 15:51 to play in the first half.
  • Maine Maritime took its first lead of the game, 13-12 at the 12:36 mark.
  • A 7-0 run put Plymouth State back on top, 19-13 midway through the first half.
  • The Mariners tied the game back up at 30-a-piece with just over a minute to play until the halftime break.
  • Plymouth State scored the final basket of the half to take a 35-32 lead into the locker room.
  • The teams traded buckets to open the second half, as Plymouth State hung onto a 47-46 advantage with 12:11 left in the contest.
  • Maine Maritime re-tied the game, 51-51, with just under ten minutes to play.
  • The Panthers exploded on a 10-2 run to go ahead 61-53 with 5:41 on the clock.
  • PSU knocked down 6-of-8 free throws in the final two minutes to close out the victory.

By the Numbers:

  • PSU shot 25-of-53 (47.2%) from the floor, and 4-of-16 (25.0%) from three.
  • The Panthers shot a season high 82.6% from the stripe (19-of-23).
  • The Mariners outrebounded Plymouth State overall, 38-34, 15-5 on the offensive glass.
  • Maine Maritime led for only 31 seconds in the contest.
  • Bench scoring was in PSU's favor, 14-11
  • The Panthers recorded seven blocks to the Mariners' one.
  • Plymouth State scored 18 points off turnovers, to Maine Maritime's 7.
  • The Panthers have now defeated Maine Maritime in both head-to-head meetings, registering a 2-0 record since 2021.
