Guilford Outlasts 19th-ranked Emory in Overtime

The Guilford College men's basketball team opened its doors to 19th-ranked Emory University. A battle between the two historic programs lived up to the hype as the Quakers prevailed in overtime over the Eagles, 83-80.

Tyler Dearman set a career-high with 31 points with six rebounds and assists. Caleb Farrish had a strong afternoon with 19 points while grabbing seven rebounds.

Coming out of the halftime locker rooms, Emory (1-1) led Guilford (3-0) 40-37. The opening inbound pass, the Eagles stole the ball and laid it in to go ahead by five. The Quakers were able to cut the deficit to four (47-43) with 17:29 on the clock.

The visitors hit a three followed by a jumper in the paint to grasp their largest lead of the game, nine (52-43). Guilford kept the opposing squad within striking distance and with 11:19 remaining in regulation, Dearman buried a three to even the score at 55.

Both teams kept the offensive rhythm going as the lead went back-and-forth. Trailing 62-61, Emory went on a 6-0 run to regain the lead. The Quakers kept the game tight as Dearman and Julius Burch made both of their free throws. Following a missed three by the Eagles, Guilford came down the floor and with time winding on the shot clock, Gabe Proctor nailed a three off a pass from Luke Proctor to even the score at 71.

Under a minute left in regulation, Luke Proctor made two free throws to push his team ahead by two (73-71). Emory missed a three on its next possession but a foul on the rebound sent Jair Knight to the line for two as he made both.

As he ball came up the floor, Guilford turned the ball over as Knight went down the floor with regulation expiring. Knight tried to lay it in but Burch came flying in and blocked the shot to force the game into overtime.

In the extra five minutes of action, Dearman capitalized on the foul trouble for the Eagles. Dearman went to the line three times and made all six free throws. As the clock hit the 1:29 mark, Dearman found a wide open Caleb Farrish on the right block for the easy lay-in and put GC ahead 81-75.

Fouls also plagued the Quakers as Emory went to the line three-straight times but went 5-6 as Guilford led 81-80 with 45 seconds remaining. Guilford ran the clock down as long as it could until Gabe Proctor hit a stepback jumper on the left wing to make it a three-point game (83-80).

The Eagles had two solid looks inside the final ten seconds but neither shot was able to drop through the basket. The Quakers held on for the upset and the victory.

Gabe Proctor was the other GC member to finish with double-digit points (11) while also corralling seven rebounds. Free throws were the difference as the Quakers were 24-29 (82.8%) while Emory was 18-26 (69.2%).
