SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — Marietta College struggled to put the ball in the basket as the Pioneers lost to No. 10 ranked Calvin University by the score of 68-51 Friday (Nov. 17) afternoon in the Great Lakes Invitational being played at Wittenberg University. The Pioneers fall to 2-1 on the season, while the Knights improve to 2-0 overall.
Marietta got off to a strong start building a small lead on the strength of seven points from David Sanford. Following a three-point play from Ethan Andersen for the first points of the game, Sanford scored MC's next seven points on a trio of jumpers, including one from three-point range.
The Pioneers led by four points, 10-6, six minutes into the game. But Calvin answered with a 14-2 run to take the lead. Which the Knights would not relinquish for the remainder of the game. Calvin nailed four three-pointers during the run.
Marietta went ice cold from the floor, behind the arc and at the free throw line. The Pioneers shot 25% from the floor, 25% from three-point range, and 51.6% at the free throw line.
A three-pointer from Trip Riemersma pushed the margin into double digits where it stayed for the duration of the game. The Knights led 35-20 at halftime. Riemersma hit one of two free throws with 6:50 left in the game to give Calvin its biggest lead of the day, 58-40.
Frank Waganfeald posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Cooper Parrott scored a team-high 14 points, while Sanford finished with nine points and Sahmi Willoughby grabbed 10 rebounds.
Jalen Overway led all scorers with 20 points to go along with 8 rebounds. Uchenne Egekeze notched a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards.
Marietta plays Illinois Wesleyan University on Saturday (Nov. 18) at 5:30 p.m.
