Bridgewater, MA --- The WPI men's basketball team kept its perfect start going Friday night. The Engineers opened the Cave Classic, hosted by Bridgewater State, with an 85-51 victory over Johnson & Wales at the Tinsley Center.
This marks the 13th time that coach Chris Bartley has opened a season with four straight wins for the Crimson and Gray. WPI will play host BSU in the championship game on Saturday at 3pm. Johnson & Wales (1-2) will meet Ithaca (NY) in the consolation game at 1pm.
The Engineers have led wire to wire in its last three games this season. They opened a 7-0 lead in the opening minutes against Johnson & Wales and were ahead, 15-2, with 13:35 remaining in the first half.
WPI held a 44-19 advantage at the break and grabbed a 30-point lead at 56-26 with 15:20 to go, widening the margin to 71-30 six minutes later.
John Adams (Douglas, MA) had his second double-double of the season and 25th of his career with 12 points and 11 rebounds plus five assists to lead the Engineers, who received votes in the D3hoops preseason poll and have already defeated No. 7 Williams during their 4-0 start.
JT Veiking (Mansfield, MA) added 11 points, making three 3-pointerss and shooting 4-of-5 overall while Justin Molen (Newark, DE) scored 10 points. Eleven players scored for WPI with Ryan Gentilucci (Worcester, MA), Adam Patterson (New York, NY), Joe Pebley (Fort Worth, TX), Jack Bleier (Victor, NY) and Ryan MacLellan (Andover, MA) joining Veiking and Molen in setting new career-highs in scoring.
Johnson & Wales, which had 23 turnovers, received eight points each from Josh Zangerle (Wappingers Falls, NY) and Silas Sawtelle (Collinsville, CT).
