William Paterson Men's Basketball Drops Road Tilt to Westfield State

WESTFIELD, Mass. – The William Paterson men's basketball team (1-1) fell 86-66 on the first day of the Hampton Inn Classic to host Westfield State (1-0) Nov. 10.

 HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • With 8:57 on the clock in the first half, a jumper by senior Shawn Summers Jr. pulled the Pioneers within three (23-20). However, the Owls outscored WP 21-12 the remainder of the frame to take a 12-point advantage (44-32) into the break.
  • The Pioneers trimmed the deficit to single digits with 17:29 remaining in the game after a made shot by senior Tyreek Montgomery. That would be as close as WP would get as Westfield State broke the game open with a 17-7 run that lasted nearly seven minutes to extend the advantage to 16 (64-48) before going to on to earn the 86-66 win.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Montgomery led all scorers in the game with 16 points to pair with six rebounds.
  • Junior David Martinez recorded a career-high 12 points on 5-of-10 (.500) shooting with six boards.
  • Summers Jr. and junior Neftali Valentin chipped in with nine points apiece.

  • William Paterson will remain in Westfield, Mass., and take on Western Connecticut State Saturday, Nov. 11, at 2:00 p.m. to close out the Hampton Inn Classic.
