RECAP: Men’s Basketball drops home opener to SUNY-Delhi, 73-63

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Bard College men's basketball came up short in the final six minutes of the second half, as SUNY-Delhi took home the victory on Wednesday night at the Stevenson Athletic Center, 76-63. 

In a contest that featured 10 lead changes, Bard (0-1) maintained a two-point advantage, 53-51, following a three from junior Sean Wilcox with 6:40 remaining, but SUNY-Delhi closed the contest on a 22-10 run to come out ahead. 

Bard had two players with double digits. Senior Lazaros Panagiotounis led the Raptors with a career-high 20 points and added seven rebounds and three assists. Panagiotounis had back-to-back threes in the last 30 seconds of the game to narrow the deficit. 

Senior Rowan Heinze added 12 points and eight rebounds while going 5-of-9 from the field. Fellow senior Elliot Harris had nine points and five rebounds and added two assists. 

The first half saw a slow start from both teams, with the Raptors not scoring their first points of the night till three minutes into the game. The defending NAC Champions, SUNY-Delhi (1-0), took a 5-2 lead after five minutes of play, but the Raptors found their rhythm and went on a 15-4 run to take a 17-10 lead with 6:55 left in the first half. The Broncos took advantage of the Raptors turnovers to go on a 15-6 run and ended the half with a one-point lead, 26-25. 

In the second half, SUNY-Delhi opened with a 6-0 run to take a seven-point lead, 32-25. Bard answered with an 11-0 run and took back the lead, 36-32 with 14:57 left in the game. SUNY-Delhi hustled their way back and took back the lead, 54-53, with back-to-back three-pointers from Gustarling Louis and held Bard scoreless for three minutes. 

Bard will travel to Columbia for an exhibition match on Sunday at 6 p.m. The game will be live-streamed on ESPN+.
