Five different plaers reached double figures, as the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team defeated St. Lawrence University, 69-42, on Friday evening in Stockton, N.J. in the first round of the NCAA Division III championship tournament. The Eagles improve to 20-8 on the season.
The teams traded baskets in the early going before UMW grasped a 9-4 margin on a three pointer from senior Da'Shawn Cook and a layup from senior Emmanuel Aghayere. After St. Lawrence tied the score, senior Greg Rowson hit a three pointer and was fouled, connecting on the free throw to return the Eagle lead to four, at 13-9. Another three from Cook and a Daniel Peterson layup lifted the Eagle lead to 18-9, and a Cameron McCravy layup with 9:16 left in the half extended UMW's lead to double figures, at 22-11.
Freshman Dorian Davis joined the barrage next, hitting back-to-back three pointers and a layup, as the margin swelled to 30-13 with 5:50 left. A Cook jumper with 1:43 left pushed the lead to 37-16, and UMW carried a 41-16 lead at halftime.
In the second, the Eagles held St. Lawrence at bay, as the Eagles wouldn't allow an extended streak to allow their foes back into the contest.
The Eagles were led by Peterson and Greg Rowson, who each scored 14 points, while Cook scored 11 and Aghayere and Davis each netted 10.
UMW shot 45.0% from the floor (27-60), making 9-25 three point attempts and 6-7 free throws. St. Lawrence shot 37.5% (15-40), making 4-17 three point tries and 8-16 free throws. The Eagles dominated the boards, 43-19.
The Eagles will advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, when they will face either host school Stockton or LaRoche at 6:30 p.m.
