Three From Rochester Named All-UAA In 2022-23

Three men, key in the success of the University of Rochester men's basketball team in 2022-23 have earned All-Association honors from the University Athletic Association coaches as announced by the conference on Thursday.
 
Senior Ross Gang is a First Team selection, graduate student Ryan Algier picked up Second Team honors, and junior Matt Wiele earned Honorable Mention status.
 
This season, Rochester boasted a 16-9 record in the regular season and finished with a 6-8 mark in UAA conference play. The Yellowjackets received an at-large berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament, which begins this week, and were among the top-25 teams in the D3hoops.com poll for the majority of the season.
 
1st Team
Ross Gang (SR, G, Short Hills, NJ/Millburn) – 3rd All-UAA honor (2022 2nd Team, 2020 HM); Served as Rochester's key cog on offense in 2022-23, leading the team in scoring at 15.7 points per game. Added 5.6 rebounds per game and 4.5 assists per game. Shot 50.7 percent from the field (143-282) while shooting a 72.8 percent mark from the free throw line. Recorded 42 steals and 22 blocks on defense and guarded the opponent's top offensive threat for most of the year. Named to the All-Tournament Team at the UR Chuck Relser Invitational and the Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout, Gang ended nationally ranked inside the top-100 in Division III in assists per game (60th), total assists (66th) and assist-to-turnover ratio (85th). Also, ranked among the Division III leaders in field goal percentage, free throws made and steals. Within the UAA, was first in steals, fourth in field goals made and total points, sixth in points per game, blocks, and defensive rebounds. Hit the 1,000-point plateau in UR's final regular season game and recorded a new career-high with 26 points in a win over Chicago on January 29.
 
2nd Team
Ryan Algier (GR, F, Fairport, NY/Fairport) – 2nd All-UAA honor (2020 1st Team); The 2022-23 preseason All-American battled through Rochester's #1 strength of schedule to the tune of 14.1 points per game and 6.5 rebounds per game while shooting 57.7 percent (120-208) from the floor. The graduate student chipped in 30 assists, 29 blocks, 16 steals and 12 3-pointers during his regular season, which lasted 21 total games (missed four due to injury). He recorded five double-doubles on the year and was named Tournament MVP at both the UR Chuck Resler Tournament and the Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout, lifting Rochester to team titles in each event. Across Division III, Algier ranks 43rd in field goal percentage and is nationally ranked in blocks, blocks per game, double-doubles and offensive rebounds per game. The 6-10 forward finished tenth in the UAA in scoring, eighth in rebounding and fourth in field goal percentage while ending with the second most blocked shots. Late in the season, Algier became the 32nd player in school history to reach 1,000 career points in a Rochester uniform.
 
Honorable Mention
Matt Wiele (JR, G, West Harrison, NY/Hackley) – 1st All-UAA honor; The junior all-around player became a regular starter for Rochester and was tasked with playing nearly every position on the court in 2022-23. He averaged 10.7 points per game, 3.8 rebounds per game and 2.2 assists per game while making 54.3 percent of his shots from the floor (95-175). He drained 10 of 30 three-point attempts and made 74.7 from the free throw line while also being stout defensively, swiping 38 steals and blocking 26 shots, averaging over 1.0 per game in each category. He was named the UAA Performer of the Week following a massive performance in mid-January when he helped lift UR past #7 Case Western Reserve with a career-high 26 points (10-12 FG), 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals. Wiele is nationally ranked in blocks and blocks per game while ranking in the top-10 in the UAA in steals (3rd), blocks (3rd), free throws (5th) and field goal percentage (6th).
