MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's basketball team closed out the regular season with a 92-80 loss to Heidelberg University Saturday (Feb. 18) afternoon in Ban Johnson Arena. The loss drops Marietta to 15-10 overall and 10-8 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Heidelberg heads into the conference tournament with an 18-7 overall record and 13-5 in conference games.
The Pioneers will be the No. 4 seed in next week's OAC Tournament. Marietta will host No. 5 seed Otterbein University in the quarterfinals on Tuesday (Feb. 21). Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. Third-seeded Heidelberg hosts No. 6 seed Capital in the other quarterfinal game. John Carroll and Mount Union, the top two seeds, will host the quarterfinal winners on Thursday in the semifinals.
After trading small leads the first seven minutes of the game. Amil Jenkins scored on a layup giving Heidelberg the lead, 11-10, for good. Three straight triples from Brady Bosma pushed the margin to 10 points, 26-16, with 7:20 left in the first half.
The Student Princes extended the lead to as many as 15 points in the opening period. Heidelberg led by 12 points, 43-31, at halftime.
A three-pointer from Zane Leitwein at the 13:15 mark of the second half capped a 14-5 Berg run and stretched the margin to 19 points, 57-38. Marietta chipped away at the deficit and back-to-back three-pointers from David Sanford and Cooper Parrott got the Pioneers within eight, 67-59, with 7:04 left in the game.
Marietta would get no closer and fell to the Student Princes 92-80.
Parrott led all scorers with 23 points. He had a trio of three-pointers and grabbed five rebounds. Sanford also connected on three shots from behind the arc and finished with 19 points. Sahmi Willoughby added 14 points and eight rebounds, while Lovenson Xavier added 12 points and five boards.
Eric Panning led five Student Princes in double figures with 19 points. He pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. Isaiah Young and Bosma had 17 and 16 points, respectively. Emmanuel Perdue finished with 12 points and six boards, while Jashun Cobb added 10 points.
