Cameron Smith Boosts Mustangs Past Messiah, 62-58

Mechanicsburg, Pa. – Stevenson men's basketball snaps a six-game slide and takes down Messiah University 62-58 Tuesday evening. 
 
First Half
 
Sophomore forward Nate Arrington opened the scoring with a turnaround jumper as the Mustangs started an early lead. Sophomore forward Cameron Smith increased the advantage to 13-5 with a three-pointer, forcing the Falcons to call a timeout. Out of the break, Messiah began to claw back, and with the help of a 5-0 run, forced Stevenson's coach Gary Stewart to call a timeout of his own to get thing back under control. Missed shots piled up for both sides until SU senior guard Davon Jones snapped the Falcons' run. Messiah's Michael Healy broke a 4:39 scoreless period as he hit a three, which was followed by a Smith three, giving the Mustangs a five-point lead. After a few Messiah free-throws, the Mustangs held a slim 20-18 advantage going into the half.
 
Second Half
 
After a set of lead changes, Messiah's Tyler Penley sank a three-pointer to give the Falcons the lead. Stevenson graduate student guard McKale Williams hit a three of his own, giving the Mustangs a six point, 26-23 advantage three minutes into the half. Five minutes later, the Mustangs' junior guard Cameron Sapienza got a handoff from senior forward Bo Wesley and was fouled but couldn't complete the three-point play. Just as the Mustangs gained a 10-point lead, the Falcons went on a 6-0 run with 2:40 to go and came within one point of Stevenson, 58-57, with a minute remaining. Smith hit a corner three and came up with a steal and a block in the final minute of play to secure the victory for the Mustangs, 62-58.

Following the victory, the Mustangs improve to 12-12 (6-8) as they return to the win column with playoffs approaching. Stevenson will host senior day at Owings Mills gymnasium on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 3 p.m. to conclude their regular season. The Falcons fall to 9-15 (4-11) and will wrap up their season at Lebanon Valley College on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 3 p.m.
