Balanced effort leads Gators past Wolverines

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Allegheny men's basketball team collected a 70-64 road Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory Saturday (Feb. 18) at Grove City.
 
The start of the game saw the teams evenly matched as they kept pace with each other and were tied at 18 midway through. However, the Wolverines went on a 7-0 run to gain a 25-18 lead. The Gators responded with their own 7-0 run to tie the game up once again. The back-and-forth play continued the rest of the half, but the Wolverines hit the final bucket of the half to lead 33-30 after 20 minutes.
 
Caden Hinckley (Boise, Idaho/Mount Lebanon (Pa.)) and Luke Barker (New Castle, Pa./Struthers (Ohio)) led the Gators with seven first half points while Preston Turk (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) added six. Allegheny owned a small 22-19 rebound advantage. 
 
Barker started the second half with a three-pointer to tie the game at 33. After trading baskets for a bit, a Ryan Lang (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) three put the Gators back in front, 42-39. Lang's three helped spark a 9-2 run that featured a pair of three-pointers by Turk as their lead grew to 48-41. The Gators maintained their lead throughout the remainder of the game. The Wolverines pulled within four multiple times in the final minute, but the Gators provided an answer every time to seal the conference victory.
 
Inside the Box

  • Hinckley led the Gators his 16th double-double of the season, leading the team with 18 points and 13 rebounds. He also had three assists, a block and a steal.
  • Barker finished with 15 points and a pair of rebounds.
  • Turk hit four three-pointers while also leading the team with six assists.
  • Lang was the fourth Gator in double figures, finishing with 10 points. He also contributed five rebounds and four assists.
  • Andre Wilder (Beaver Falls, Pa./Lincoln Park) ended the game with eight points and seven rebounds.
  • Isaiah Portis (Medina, Ohio/Norwayne) assisted on three baskets.
  • Allegheny owned a 46-38 advantage on the boards. 
  • The Gators assisted on 19 of their 23 field goals. 

News and Notes

  • The win puts the Gators at 16-8 overall and 14-5 in PAC play this season.
  • A long history, the Gators are now 72-73 all-time against Grove City after sweeping the regular season series.
  • The 16th win of the season for the Gators matched their highest win total since they won 16 games during the 2002-03 season.
