NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Led by 55 combined points from Jeremy Beckler and Luke Harris, including 32 in the second half, the Carleton College men's basketball team rallied from 16 points down to defeat Saint John's University, 77-72, a result that clinched at least a share of the MIAC regular-season title for the Knights.
This is Carleton's (19-3, 14-3 MIAC) sixth MIAC title all time, and the first since 2010-11. The Knights have now won 20 total conference crowns in men's basketball, including 14 titles in the Midwest Conference.
Beckler finished with a game-high 31 points, his second consecutive 30-plus point performance and his fourth game of at least 30 points this season. Harris totaled 24 points on 8-of-10 shooting, surpassing the 20-point mark for the second straight game and seventh this this season.
Saint John's (13-9, 10-7 MIAC) was eager to avenge its home loss to Carleton back on January 16, and early on, it appeared that the Johnnies would do just that. The visitors began the game red-hot from outside, converting on their first seven attempts from 3-point range. The seventh of those triples gave the Johnnies a 14-point lead with 8:56 still to play in the opening half, and the margin grew to as wide as 16 at 42-26 with only 1:56 to play. The Knights answered with a 7-0 run but still trailed at halftime 42-33.
Carleton cut the deficit to five only 90 seconds after intermission, but Saint John's answered with an 8-0 run to extend the lead right back up to 13 at 54-41 with 15:17 still to play
The next thirteen minutes began a slow but steady comeback, with Carleton leaning heavily on the shoulders of Harris and Beckler, while the Johnnies turned to their key scorers in Ryan Thissen and Mitchell Plombon.
The Knights, who had been averaging 10.6 triples a game, did not make a 3-pointer in the second half and were only 2-of-13 (15.4 percent) in the game. It didn't matter.
After Ryan Thissen scored in close for Saint John's at the 3:35 mark, the Johnnies held a 71-67 lead. Carleton closed the game with a 10-1 run, with Beckler scoring six of those points while Harris and Beck Page added two points apiece.
Beckler's turnaround hook shot in the paint tied the game at 71-71 with 2:41 to play. Neither team scored again until the final minute, when Beckler scored again on a layup through traffic with 50 seconds left.
After a defensive stop, Page nailed a pair of free throws to give Carleton a 75-71 advantage and Beckler iced the game at the charity stripe to put him over 30 points.
Alex Gibbens contributed nine points and eight rebounds, while making one of the Knights' two 3-pointers all evening. His eighth rebound was his biggest: an offensive board to put Page back on the line with eight seconds remaining.
Despite a season-worst 2-of-13 (15.4 percent) performance from deep, the Knights shot 47.5 percent from the field (28-of-59), including 55.2 percent (16-of-29) during the second half. The Johnnies followed up their 55.2 percent (16-of-29) showing in the first half with only a 34.6 percent (9-of-26) effort after intermission and finished at 45.5 percent for the game. Carleton was also helped by a 19-for-26 outing on their free throws, including 17-for-21 from their top-scoring duo.
Defensively, Spencer Goetz held Saint John's top shooter Kooper Vaughn to a single made field goal on nine attempts, as well as a pair of turnovers. Goetz added four points and four rebounds to his two steals.
Thissen led the Johnnies with 21 points, while Plombon added a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double. Carson Schoeller was the only other Johnnie in double figures with 10 points.
Carleton completed a season series sweep of Saint John's for the first time since the 2015-16 campaign. The Knights are now three games up on Macalester College (15-7, 11-6 MIAC) in the conference standings with only three games remaining in the regular-season slate. Saint John's slipped into a tie with Saint Mary's for third place.
