Potsdam, NY – Senior Blake Gearhart scored a career-high 28 points as the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team scored 19 points in overtime to claim a 91-82 victory over Hobart College on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Knights improved to 9-12 overall and 6-8 in the Liberty League, while the Statesmen dropped to 12-9 and 8-6. Clarkson takes on Ithaca College and Rensselaer next weekend in the final home games of the 2022-23 season.
Saturday afternoon's contest was close throughout, as neither team could ever gain enough of a foothold to have the other in a scoring panic. Hobart led by five seven minutes into the game when Isaiah Washington converted in the lane, but Clarkson responded with an 11-2 run, featuring numerous makes in the paint. Down by five at the 6:22 mark following a make from Ryan Miles-Ferguson, Hobart reclaimed the lead with five quick points on a 3-pointer from Jackson Meshanic and a layup from Patrick Walker. The two teams then exchanged the lead a few times, but a 3-pointer from Walker at the buzzer gave the Statesmen a five-point lead at the break.
Hobart pushed its advantage to six early in the second half, but Clarkson produced an 11-4 roll, capped by a Teddy Fravel layup at 15:32 to put the Knights on top. Clarkson would then extend its advantage to six, but could not pull away. The two teams tied a handful of times, and throughout the half, essentially traded baskets. The Statesmen took the lead (68-67) at the 3:40 mark on a floater by Aidan Rodgers, but the momentum failed to shift in Hobart's direction, as the Knights kept things close and a late free throw from Finn Cork tied the game, forcing extra time.
Clarkson was off to the races in overtime, pushing the tempo on the break and getting several makes in the lane. Gearhart scored on a curl at the 2:05 mark to give Clarkson a six-point lead. Thirty seconds later, a steal and a basket on the break from Gearhart put the margin at 10, the largest of the game, but Hobart got a late gasp when Jackson Meshanic responded with a 3-pointer at the other end. Although the margin fell to six in the final minute, the Knights hit enough free throws to hold on for the win.
Gearhart scored 28 points on 10-for-16 shooting from the floor and 6-for-6 from the free throw line while also adding five assists. Matteo Sinon scored a season-high 18 points on 6-for-10 shooting and Ryan Miles-Ferguson tossed in 15 points to go along with six rebounds. Finn Cork was one rebound short of a double-double on 11 points and nine rebounds.
Despite having an off night, Jackson Meshanic still produced a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds, as well as five assists. Patrick Walker scored 14 of his team-high 21 points in the first half and shot 8-for-14 from the field, while Aidan Rodgers contributed 13 points, going 6-for-13 from the floor.
