The Case Western Reserve University men's basketball utilized a well-rounded scoring effort to put up a season-high point total, as the Spartans rolled to a 101-73 victory over Brandeis University at Horsburgh Gymnasium on Friday night.

The win completes the Spartans' season sweep over the Judges, as CWRU improved to 15-3 over and to 5-3 in University Athletic Association games this season. CWRU remained one game behind first place in the conference standings with six games left to play in the campaign. Brandeis dropped to 11-8 overall with a 3-5 UAA record.

The Spartans broke the century mark for the first time this season, and the first time overall since a 102-80 win over Hilbert last season. It was the first time the Spartans have scored 100 points in a UAA victory since a 101-93 win over Emory during the 1996-97 campaign, and just the fifth 100-point effort in UAA play all-time for CWRU.

Four Spartans scored in double figures on Friday with senior forward Cole Frilling leading the way with 16 points on a four-of-six shooting effort, all of which was from behind the three-point line. Sophomore guard Sam Trunley came off the bench to score 14 points on five-of-eight shooting overall and a four-of-seven performance from long range. Graduate student guard Danny Frauenheim scored 13 points to move 11 away from 1,000 for his career and added a game-high nine assists. Sophomore forward Umar Rashid added 12 points with five rebounds and three blocks, and junior forward Ian Elam scored seven points and collected a team-high nine rebounds.

The Spartans finished the game shooting 56.6% overall (30-of-53) and 48.3% (14-of-29) from three-point range.

CWRU took a 5-3 lead at the 18:24 mark in the first half on a three-point shot by graduate student guard Mitch Prendergast and never trailed again in the game. The Judges remained close through most of the first half and trailed by just two, 24-22, with 5:29 to play in the opening stanza before the Spartans began to pull away. Trunley hit all four of his three-point shots in the final five minutes of the first half, including a buzzer-beater at the end of the period, and CWRU closed out the frame on a 16-6 run to take a 45-30 lead into the break.

A key stretch early in the second half helped the Spartans cement their lead. Leading 51-38, Frauenheim stole the ball and was fouled on the breakaway, giving CWRU two free throws and the ball back. Frauenheim converted both attempts, and then on the ensuing possession, junior guard Luke Thorburn converted a traditional three-point play, which also included a technical foul against the Judges. All told, the Spartans scored seven points without Brandeis touching the basketball, stretching a 13-point lead to a 20-point advantage, 58-38, with 17:38 to play in the game.

CWRU remained up by at least 20 for the majority of the game and led by as many as 33, taking an 81-48 lead on a dunk by Trunley with 10:22 to play, before closing out the 28-point victory.

Including the contributions from Trunley and Rashid, the Spartans' bench outscored the Judges 51-22 in the game.

CWRU will be back in action on Sunday, February 5, as the team will host NYU to wrap up the weekend. Tip-off is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
