DANVILLE, Va. – Senior Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) matched his career high with 26 points and junior Lance Johnson (South Riding, Va./Freedom) tallied a career-best 18 points, all in the second half, as the second-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team posted an 86-48 ODAC victory at Averett on Wednesday evening to extend its win streak to 16 games.

How it Happened:

  • The Cougars had the first bucket of the contest before Talbert hit a jumper and two free throws followed by a layup from junior Daniel Mbangue (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) as the Yellow Jackets took a 6-2 lead three minutes into the contest. AU would use a 13-4 spurt to take a 15-10 advantage with 11:30 left in the first period. Talbert had six points in a 12-0 run as R-MC took the lead for good, up 22-15 with seven minutes remaining. The Cougars closed to within four at 29-25 with two minutes left before Talbert made two free throws and junior Will Coble (Charlotte, N.C./Davidson Day) buried a three-pointer at the buzzer as the visitors led 34-25 at the break. Talbert had 16 points in the first half.
  • A layup by Talbert sparked a 19-4 spurt to start the second half as the Yellow Jackets built a 53-29 advantage with 12:30 remaining in the contest. Talbert had eight of the first 10 points in the run, which was capped by Johnson's first field goal of the contest. Johnson had three straight field goals to push the lead to 30 at 66-36 with eight minutes left. Freshman Kyle Keener (Canton, Ga./Sequoyah) had a fast break layup with three minutes remaining to give the Yellow Jackets their largest lead at 40 points at 84-44 before recording the 86-48 win.

  • Senior Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) had three blocked shots to give him 242 for his career, a program and ODAC record.
  • R-MC had two players score in double figures, with 26 by Talbert and 18 by Johnson.
  • Talbert went 10 for 14 from the floor and 6 for 6 from the free throw line.
  • Johnson was 9 for 11 on field goals.
  • R-MC shot a season-high 61% from the floor (36-59). The Yellow Jackets shot 72% inside the arc (31-43).
  • Mallory had six points to give him 1,305 career points, placing him 22nd on R-MC's career scoring list.

  • The Yellow Jackets had 15 steals and just eight turnovers. Talbert had five thefts and freshman Keishawn Pulley, Jr. (Louisa, Va./St. Christopher's) matched his season high with four.

  • The Yellow Jackets extended their win streak to 16 games. R-MC has won 29 straight ODAC contests over the past three seasons and is 59-2 in conference contests over the past five seasons.
  • The R-MC defense held AU to 48 points. The Yellow Jackets have held their past three opponents below 50 points and six of their past seven under 60.
