NORTON, Mass. – Senior forward Aaron Williams (Springfield, Mass.) scored 20 points and became the 16th player in school history to reach the 1,000-point career mark, while the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's basketball team set a school record for fewest points allowed in an 84-39 victory over visiting Massachusetts Institute of Technology this evening in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at Emerson Gymnasium on the campus of Wheaton in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons improve to 9-8 on the season, including 4-3 in league play. The 45-point victory ranks as the largest margin of victory over a NEWMAC team in school annals and is Wheaton's biggest positive scoring differential since a 112-64 win over Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on November 18. 2005.
The Engineers fall to 3-13 and 1-6.
The Lyons held MIT to just 24.6% (14-57) shooting from the floor, including 5-17 (18.5%) from three-point range. Wheaton dominated the glass with a 55-25 advantage and owned a 26-4 scoring margin in second chance points. A dozen different players recorded at least one point for the Lyons during the game.
Williams drilled three of six from three-point range and was a perfect 5-5 from the line to go with seven rebounds, two blocks and an assist for Wheaton. Sophomore guard Ty Murphy (Dedham, Mass.) came off the bench to can five trifectas in 10 attempts to finish with 15 points in 16 minutes and added three boards and an assist. First year forward Eoin Morrissey (Watertown, Mass.) finished a rebound short of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds in addition to a pair of steals and a blocked shot. Senior guard Alex Carlisle (Saint Johnsbury, Vt.) led all playmakers with six assists and added seven points, six boards, three steals and a block. He also passed Mike Stanton for 10th on the Lyons' career scoring list and now has 1,092 points.
Sophomore guard Kade Killeen (Austin, Texas) led the Engineers with 11 points and seven rebounds in addition to a blocked shot, while classmate Spencer Lin (Menlo Park, Calif.) dropped in 11 points to go with two assists, a rebound and a steal.
Williams scored on a lay-up and then converted a free throw with 9:09 to go in the first half to give him career points 1000, 1001 and 1002 and give Wheaton a 26-8 lead.
Lin knocked down a jumper from outside the paint to give MIT a 6-5 edge with 15:37 left in the opening half, but it was the visitors' last lead of the night.
The Lyons put the game away with a torrid 33-6 run, including nine unanswered points to close the run and take a 38-12 advantage with 3:31 showing on the first half clock. Williams netted 12 points during the stretch for Wheaton.
First year guard Tim Minicozzi (Belmont, Mass.) and junior guard Micah Boone (Pike Road, Ala.) hit back-to-back three-balls to pull the Engineers to within 38-18 with 1:48 left in the half. The Lyons scored the final five points of the half to take a 43-18 lead into the break.
Wheaton held a 43-20 lead with 19:34 remaining in the second half, before putting together a 22-5 stretch, fueled by a trio of threes from Murphy, to take a 65-25 cushion with 10:22 to play in the game.
Killeen scored the next four points for MIT, but the Lyons ripped off 14 straight, including five from sophomore forward Tarmo Tari (Chelmsford, Mass.) and four from first year guard Hector Perez III (Brockton, Mass.), to take their largest lead of the contest at 79-29 with 5:12 to go in the game.
The Engineers got no closer than the final score at, 84-39, for the remainder of the game.
Wheaton returns to action on Saturday, January 28 when it hosts NEWMAC foe United States Coast Guard Academy at Emerson Gymnasium for a rare 11:00 a.m. tip-off, while MIT hosts Clark University in league play on the same day at 2:00 p.m.
