SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – January 21, 2023 – A big second-half comeback wasn't enough for Hiram in an 85-78 overtime loss to Wittenberg on Saturday afternoon.
The Terriers trailed by 9 points at halftime before going on a 9-0 run and taking a 58-55 lead with under six minutes to play in regulation. Hiram held its opposition scoreless for over 5 minutes of game time during that run (10:48 to 5:28 in second half).
Wittenberg scored 8 minutes in the final minute of the second half to event the score at 71-71 and send Hiram to its 3rd overtime game of the season, all of which have come in conference play.
The Tigers would score 12 of their 14 overtime points from the free-throw line to pull ahead and even the season series between the two teams at one game apiece. Hiram beat Wittenberg on Dec. 3, 80-70.
Brodgie Gordon played a game-high 40 minutes, scoring 24 points on 10-19 shooting from the field and 3-6 shooting from beyond the perimeter. Trent Jakacki (16 points, 6-10 FG), Dushawn Hill (13, 5-10) and Ivan Yang (13, 5-8) also contributed to the efficient effort on offense.
For Gordon, the 24-point performance marks his fifth 20-point game of the season and his eighth game with a FG pct over 50%. It was also his second game of the season with at least 10 field goals, joining the 12-FG game he had in the season opener against Geneva on Nov. 9.
Jakacki has now scored in double-figures in 15 of his 18 games with the Hiram program.
The Terriers will next take on Kenyon at 8 p.m. on Wednesday in Gambier, Ohio.
