KEUKA PARK, NY - The Alfred University men's basketball team enjoyed making both team and individual history as part of a 73-60 win over Keuka College on Friday night from the JMW Recreation and Athletic Center.
With their win over the Wolves (5-6, 1-5 Empire 8), the Saxons (11-3, 6-1 Empire 8) have won 11 of their first 14 games to begin the regular season for the first time since the 1988-89 season. That particular season was coached by Roman Catalino, who led the Saxons to the NCAA Tournament.
"We're happy with our start," Head Coach Erich Kaempffe said. "We have found some different ways to win. However, we have a long, long way to go and need to get better in a lot of areas."
Brewster Marshall (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) made individual history for the men's basketball program on Friday, recording his 650th career rebound to enter the top 10 all-time in program history. Marshall is just the sixth player in AU men's basketball history with 1,000 points and 650 rebounds during his collegiate career. To this point in the season, Marshall ranks 17th in career points (1,182) and 9th in career rebounds (658). Marshall finished the game with 15 points and 15 rebounds to go with two blocks and a steal for the Saxons.
"It's hard to put into words what Brewster means to this program and to me," Kaempffe said. "I could not be happier for him. There is no one more deserving.
Marshall opened scoring for the Saxons in the first half, recording the team's first four points. Three-point shots from Anthony Ruffino (Buffalo, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield), Kevin Durkin (Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph's Collegiate) and Robby Hicks (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) had AU leading by as many as nine points over the Wolves. Moments later, a layup from Franlys Valenzuela (Santiago de los Cabelleros, Dominican Republic/San Ysidro) gave Alfred University their first double-digit advantage of the evening. The Wolves ended the first half on an 11-0 run, but the Saxons still held a 32-29 lead going into halftime.
Each side traded early shots early in the second half, but a three-point shot from Durkin extended the lead for Alfred University. An additional layup from Marshall had the Saxons lead back to double-digit figures with 11 minutes remaining. The Wolves continued to hit shots, but multiple baskets from beyond the arc from Adam Enders (Belfast, NY/Belfast) across the final 10 minutes gave the Saxons enough room to secure the victory.
"Utica is a great team," Kaempffe said. "They are very well-coached and have great players. We have a ton of respect for them."
Alfred University will next face a quick turnaround, as they travel to face top-ranked Utica University on Saturday at 4:00 PM.
