LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Junior Davidson Hubbard (Charlotte, NC) posted game-highs of 20 points and 10 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season to lead Hampden-Sydney College to an 86-67 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball road win at Randolph College on Wednesday night in Lynchburg. Senior Ryan Clements (Conyers, GA) added 15 points, while juniors Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) and DJ Wright (Greensboro, GA) each contributed 11 points for the visiting Tigers (13-4, 8-1 ODAC), who led 35-26 at halftime and used a late 22-4 run en route to their 11th win in the last 12 games. Jordan Phillips-McLoyd had 18 points for the host WildCats (5-13, 1-7 ODAC).
"Hard fought road win tonight," said fourth-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "We knew we were going to need to bring the energy and I thought we did that from the moment we got off the bus. Our bench enthusiasm and engagement was amazing all night and really helped take us home."
H-SC, getting votes (36) in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25, took an early 6-4 advantage at 16:08 after baskets from juniors Josiah Hardy (Ashburn) and Hubbard, along with an offensive rebound and put-back inside by Clements. Randolph used a quick 10-5 run to lead 14-11, but the Tigers answered back with a 13-2 run of their own to take a 24-16 lead with 9:10 on the clock. Wright sparked the outburst with five points, including a three-point field goal, while senior Mile Harris (Virginia Beach) and Brazil each added three-pointers, as well. The WildCats closed to within 26-24 before the Garnet & Grey closed the half on a 9-2 run to lead 35-26 at the intermission—getting a three-pointer from Hubbard, another basket by Wright and four points from Clements, including a steal and slam dunk.
Randolph used a 12-6 run to begin the second half and close to within 41-40 with 16:18 remaining, but H-SC responded with a quick 9-2 run to lead 50-42 at 14:14—getting seven points from Hubbard, including a three-pointer. The Tigers led 59-51 at 11:03 after a basket down low from Harris, and the lead was 62-52 at 10:35 following another three-pointer by Brazil. The WildCats were within 62-57 at 9:39 before the Garnet & Grey took control with a 22-4 run to lead 84-61 with just 4:04 left to play. Hubbard scored eight points during the outburst, while Clements had seven points and junior Alex Elliott (Marietta, GA) added five points—each of the three scoring on dunks on consecutive possessions during the late run. The two teams played their respective benches over the final three minutes toward the final margin.
Hubbard led H-SC with his game-highs of 20 points (9-12 FGs) and 10 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season. Clements finished with 15 points for the Tigers. Brazil (3-6 3FGs) and Wright each contributed 11 points, with Brazil adding a game-high three assists, as well. Elliott had nine points and four rebounds. H-SC shot 49% (35-71) from the field, including 35% (10-29) on three-pointers, and 86% (6-7) at the free throw line. The Tigers enjoyed a 42-24 advantage in points scored in the paint, and a 25-12 edge in second chance points.
Phillips-McLoyd led Randolph with his 18 points (4-10 3FGs). Danny Bickey had 17 points for the WildCats. Randolph shot 43% (24-56) from the field, including 38% (8-21) on three-pointers, and 85% (11-13) at the line.
H-SC will remain on the road for a non-conference game at Salisbury (MD) University on Saturday, January 21, at 1 p.m. in Salisbury, Maryland. The Tigers return home next week for a big contest against nationally-ranked No. 17 Guilford (NC) College on Wednesday night, Jan. 25, at 7 p.m. in Fleet Gym.
