ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's basketball team outscored Pitt-Bradford in both halves as part of a 95-70 victory on Tuesday night from the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.
The Saxons (4-2, 0-0 Empire 8) scored 20 baskets off assists, while the Panthers (2-4, 0-0 AMCC) turned the ball over 13 times.
Alfred University was led by the efforts of Brewster Marshall (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads), who stuffed the box score with 29 points, nine rebounds, six assists, three blocks, and three steals. Adam Enders (Belfast, NY/Belfast) finished the game with 22 points and three assists. Casey Curran (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) added 11 points and three boards for AU.
"Winning is hard at this level, so we're thrilled to head into the break with a win," Head Coach Erich Kaempffe said. "I thought our guys were incredibly unselfish tonight."
An early 8-0 run by the Saxons had them leading by as many as seven points, thanks to three-point shots from Curran and Enders. Alfred University continued to hit shots from deep, as efforts from Enders and Marshall extended the team's lead by 13 points. Enders finished the first half with 19 points, as AU entered the break with a 50-40 advantage. Elliot Bowen (Salamanca, NY/Ellicotville) sparked an opening 12-2 run to begin the second half for the Saxons. Back-to-back baskets for Marshall had Alfred University leading by 21 points with 14 minutes remaining in regulation. Marshall hit four shots from deep in the second half, as the Saxons eventually relied on their depth to close out the game and secure the victory.
"I think we're happy to have won more than we've lost, but we know we have a long way to go," Kaempffe said. "We're excited to get some rest and then then come back to get to work."
Alfred University will next enjoy the Thanksgiving break before returning to action on the road against St. John Fisher University on Friday, December 2 at 7:30 PM.
