Grunder Scores 32 as Cortland Sails Past Buffalo State, 102-59

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Austin Grunder (Trumansburg/Charles O. Dickerson) scored 32 points and moved into second place on the Cortland men's basketball career scoring chart as the Red Dragons sailed past visiting Buffalo State, 102-59, in SUNYAC action. 
 
Cortland improved to 12-2 overall and sits alone atop the SUNYAC standings with a 7-0 mark, one game better than Oswego (6-1) and a game and a half ahead of Brockport, Oneonta and New Paltz (each 5-1). Cortland hosts Brockport on Tuesday at 4 p.m. and Oswego Friday at 7:30 p.m. 
 
Grunder shot 10-of-17 from the field and 11-of-15 for the foul line on the way to his 12th career game of at least 30 points, including three this season. He also finished with a game-high 13 rebounds. The senior forward/guard has scored 1,422 points in three seasons, trailing only Jesse Winter (1,525 points from 2009-13) for the program lead. Grunder also ranks second at Cortland with 807 career rebounds; Jon DeHay is the career leader with 913 from 1997-2002. 
 
Aaron Coston (Kerhonkson/Rondout Valley) finished with 18 points and six rebounds in 23 minutes. He made 6-of-7 shots from both the field and the foul line. Coston tallied 14 of his points in the first half. Kareem Lubin (Monroe/Washingtonville) scored 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor and 6-of-7 free throw accuracy and dished out three assists. 
 
Humberto Cabrera (Millbrook) led Cortland with six assists, all in the first half. Kendall Arcuri (Staten Island/St. Joseph by the Sea) ended with eight points on 4-of-6 shooting, while Cam Williams (Rome/Rome Free Academy) and Isaiah Austin (Albany) scored seven points apiece. Williams also had three assists and a team-high three steals. 
 
Matt Parkinson led Buffalo State (1-12, 0-7 SUNYAC) with 20 points. He made 7-of-11 shots overall and 3-of-5 from the 3-point arc. Jeremiah Miller tallied 13 points and six rebounds and Jaiden Allen hit 4-of-8 treys and ended with 12 points. 
 
The game was tight for the first 9-10 minutes. The score was tied at 15-15 with 11:10 left in the half before Cortland rattled off 14 straight points, starting with a Cabrera 3-point play followed by five straight points from Coston. The Red Dragons led 29-15 with 7:06 left and 35-22 at the 5:01 mark, then finished the half on a 26-12 streak to lead 55-27 at halftime. Cortland's largest lead was 99-45 with 4:34 left after a Riley McEvoy (Homer) 3-pointer, and the Red Dragons reached the century mark on Rahsean Melvin's (Valhalla) free throw with 2:55 left. Buffalo State scored nine of the final 11 points. 
 
Cortland shot a season-best 53 percent from the floor (35-for-66) despite making only 6-of-23 3-pointers. The Red Dragons were 26-for-34 from the foul line as the teams were whistled for a combined 43 fouls – 26 by Buffalo State and 17 by Cortland.
