Men’s Basketball Comes Out On Top Over Mavericks

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University men's basketball team traveled to Buffalo on Saturday to compete against Medaille University. After 40 minutes of play, the Cardinals came out on top with a final score of 71-54. This win moves Fisher's overall record to 7-5 and brings them to 3-2 in conference play. The Mavericks fall to a 3-8 record and is 1-3 in conference play.

 

As the first half began, Daniel Cook had a defensive rebound converting on the other end with a lay up to start the scoring. Jack Foley tallied the next two points getting Fisher the early 4-0 lead. The Mavericks answered back gaining the lead and going on a run. The Cardinals saw their biggest deficit of the half, seven points, at the 11-minute mark. Fisher began to chip away at the deficit starting with a basket by Cook. Ryan Gentile regained an 18-16 lead with a three-point bucket assisted by Cook. Brendan Trapper had the last four points of the half to give Fisher their largest lead of the game up to that point, 13 points. The Cardinals went into halftime with a score of 33-20.

 

Fisher picked up right where they left off as the second half began. Cook had the first four points to lead the way for the Cardinals. Fisher showed they were not going to give up the lead they built. They played a solid team game and ran with it for the rest of regulation. Connor Recore tallied six and Akinlana Popoola tallied four to contribute to the second half success. The Cardinals had their biggest lead of the night with seven minutes left after Foley converted on both free throw attempts, giving Fisher a 26-point lead. After 40 minutes, the Cardinals stayed on top and won by a score of 71-54.

 

Cook led the team with 14 points, two assists, nine rebounds, one block and two steals. Cook went 70% on his field goal for the night. Gentile ended the night with 11 points, two assists, one rebound, and one steal. He also finished going 60% on his three point shots. Trapper finished with nine points, one rebound, one assist, and one block.

 

Up next for the Cardinals, they will host Keuka College on Tuesday Jan. 10th. This Empire 8 matchup is set to start at 7:30 pm.
