YORK, Pa. - Christopher Newport University improved to 15-2 on Saturday thanks to a 75-72 overtime victory over the Spartans of York College. Sophomore guard Ty Henderson knocked down a key three-pointer in the final minute of regulation and then sank a triple in overtime to help propel the Captains to their sixth straight win. York fell to 7-7 for the year, and the Spartans had a five-game winning streak snapped.

Fifth-year senior Matthew Brodie led the way for the seventh-ranked Captains, scoring 19 points, with a dozen coming in the second half and overtime. Junior Jahn Hines posted 16, with ten coming in the second half. Henderson also reached double digits with 14 points.

CNU led by ten at the half, 38-28, only to have York catch fire in the second half by shooting 60 percent from the field (15-of-25). The Captains held their biggest lead of the game, 40-28, early in the second stanza before York began whittling away the advantage. The Spartans finally tied the game at 65-65 with 1:34 to play when freshman Jayden Rowe scored two of his game-high 26 points on a layup. York then jumped ahead, 68-65, when sophomore Jackson Mascari drilled a three-pointer with 44 ticks left on the clock to give the Spartans their first lead since a 17-15 edge in the opening half.

Christopher Newport battled back and it was Henderson connecting for the game-tying triple with 32 seconds remaining to tie the game at 68-68. The three-pointer was the first of the second half for CNU after the Captains had missed eight straight attempts from long range. York's attempt to win the game in regulation went by the boards when Rowe missed a three in the final seconds and the teams headed to overtime.

In the extra period, the Captains took the lead just 11 seconds into overtime on Henderson's fourth three-pointer of the game, and CNU never trailed again. Brodie added a three with 1:55 left in OT to put the Captains in front, 74-72. Senior Rodney Graves made a huge defensive play to block a shot on a driving layup attempt by York's Chris Miers with 29 seconds left to preserve a 74-72 advantage for the Captains. Junior Trey Barber sank a free throw, one of his nine points for the day, with 26 seconds remaining to account for the 75-72 final verdict. Barber, who pulled down a team-high ten rebounds, would add his third block of the day in the final seconds to secure the hard-fought victory for the Captains..

Senior Ian Anderson left the game late in the first half due to a rib injury, and after the game Head Coach John Krikorian explained his loss and the impact it had on the game.

"I'm very proud of my players for the way they performed today and what they did to win this game," Krikorian said. "At halftime after Ian was injured, they committed themselves to winning this game, and again I couldn't be more proud of the way they played today."

The Captains made 31-of-67 shots in the game (46 percent) and knocked down six-of-19 (32 percent) from beyond the arc. York made 28-of-59 for the day (48 percent) and the Spartans were 8-of-24 (33 percent) from distance. CNU out-rebounded York, 43-35, with Barber (1o) and Graves (8) leading the Captains on the boards.

The Captains travel to Ashland, Va., on Wednesday night for a showdown with second-ranked Randolph-Macon College. The Yellow Jackets, National Champions last year, are 13-1 and won their 11th straight game on Saturday by beating Guilford College. Tip-off time is set for 8:00 p.m. at Crenshaw Gymnasium.
