Cortland Men Win Tight Battle vs. Scranton, 87-82

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Austin Grunder (Trumansburg/Charles O. Dickerson) totaled 29 points, 14 rebounds and five assists, and Aaron Coston (Kerhonkson/Rondout Valley) scored four of his career-high tying 16 points in the final 30 seconds, as Cortland defeated visiting Scranton, 87-82, in a closely-contested non-league men's basketball game at Corey Gymnasium. Cortland improved to 10-2 with the victory, while the Royals fell to 9-3. The game featured 12 ties and 13 lead changes, and neither team led by more than six points.

Grunder was 11-of-24 from the field with two 3-pointers and Coston finished 5-of-7 from the floor and 6-for-6 from the foul line and added six rebounds and three steals. Two other Red Dragons scored in double figures. Kareem Lubin (Monroe/Washingtonville) made 6-of-13 shots, including 3-of-4 from the 3-point arc, and ended with 17 points and five rebounds. Cam Williams (Rome/Rome Free Academy) hit 6-of-10 shots and scored 15 points. Isaiah Preston (Penfield) and Humberto Cabrera (Millbrook) finished with four and three assists, respectively.

Jackson Danzig led Scranton with 31 points, nine rebounds, four steals and three assists. He made 12-of-18 shots overall and 5-of-7 from 3-point range. Will McLoughlin scored 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting in 25 minutes off the bench and Stephen Braunstein added 13 points.

Scranton lost despite shooting 59 percent from the floor overall and 53 percent (10-of-19) from deep. Cortland ended at 48 percent overall and 40 percent (8-of-20) from the arc. Cortland, however, utilized 15 offensive rebounds to hold an 18-2 advantage in "second chance" points and the Red Dragons led 20-11 in points off turnovers. Scranton finished with 13 turnovers to Cortland's 10.

Scranton's largest lead was 11-5 four and a half minutes into the game. Cortland scored the next six points to tie the game at 11, and the Red Dragons eventually led 40-39 at halftime on a Williams buzzer-beating 3-pointer. The lead changed hands 11 times during the opening 20 minutes.

Cortland held leads from one to five points over the first 10 minutes of the second half, but Scranton tied the game at 63-63 on a Braunstein 3-pointer with 9:44 left and later took a 69-68 lead on Danzig's 3-pointer with 8:25 remaining. Cortland regained the lead on Cabrera's 3-pointer less than 20 seconds later and Scranton never led again.

The game was tied at 75-75 on a Danzig steal and dunk with 4:49 left. A little over a minute later Williams stole the ball after a Scranton defensive rebound, hit a layup and was fouled with 3:20 left. His ensuing free throw put Cortland up 78-75. McLoughlin's jumper with 2:39 left was answered by a Williams layup at the 2:20 mark and Cortland led 80-77.

Neither team scored again until less than 30 seconds remained. Coston grabbed a rebound after a Cortland air-ball jumper and put home a layup to give the Red Dragons an 82-77 lead with 29 seconds left. Braunstein hit two foul shots with 24 seconds left, and Williams made the first of two free throws with 19.7 seconds left to push the lead to four. Coston grabbed a defensive rebound after a Scranton missed 3-pointer and was fouled. His two free throws with 7.1 seconds left gave Cortland its largest lead at 85-79. Braunstein nailed a 3-pointer with 2.7 seconds left, but Lubin hit two foul shots with 1.5 seconds left to close out the victory.
