Sea Gulls Second-half comeback falls short at Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Salisbury University men's basketball team was down by as much as 17 points in the first half, faced a 13-point deficit at halftime and nearly made a comeback in the second half but fell to the Gettysburg Bullet, 67-64, in a road contest on Saturday,

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Gettysburg started the game hot on offense and jumped out to an early lead, 13-4, with 15:44 left in the first half.
  • A tough second-chance layup from Andrew Silver sparked a 10-3 run for Salisbury to cut into the lead, 16-14, with just over 11 minutes left on the clock.
  • Just over a minute later, Brendan Davis tied the game up at 19 with some fancy footwork in the paint and a layup.
  • The Bullets answered with a 14-0 run over the next few minutes to go up 33-19 with 6:41 to go in the half.
  • Both teams traded shots and baskets in the closing moments of the half. Davis capped the scoring with a driving layup in the final seconds to cut into the lead and send the teams into halftime with a score of 42-29
  • Cameron Heard made a tough layup at the 15:16 mark of the second half that sparked a quick 6-0 run for Salisbury to make it 49-38.
  • Jordan Oates knocked down a three-pointer to cut the lead down to eight, 51-43, with 13 minutes to play.
  • The battle was on from there. Both teams traded baskets for the next several minutes, and after a made driving layup from Brandon Craig, the Sea Gulls were down just three, 61-58, with four minutes left on the clock.
  • Greg Bloodsworth drilled a mid-range jumper to bring Salisbury to within two, 62-60, at the 1:44 mark.
  • Following a Gettysburg timeout, Colin Farrell made a triple to extend the Bullets' lead to 65-60 with 1:22 to go.
  • On the next Sea Gull possession, Bloodsworth drew a foul and converted both free throws to bring the Bullet lead back down to three, 65-62, with a minute left.
  • Carl Schaller was able to break away from the Salisbury press and make a fast-break layup to put Gettysburg back up by five, 67-62, with just under 10 seconds left to play.
  • Davis added another bucket for the Sea Gulls with the clock running out and the game finished with a final score of 67-64.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES

  • Salisbury shot 47.2 percent (25-for-53) from the field, including 28.6 percent (2-for-7) from three.
  • Sean Carr led the Sea Gulls with 14 points on 6-for-13 shooting. He also grabbed three rebounds.
  • Greg Bloodsworth and Brendan Davis each scored 12 points. Davis added three rebounds and three assists to his line.
  • Andrew Silver hauled in a team-high five rebounds off the bench.
  • As a team, Salisbury stole the ball seven times.
  • The Sea Gulls scored at will in the paint with 40 of their 64 points coming in close.

GETTYSBURG GAME NOTES

  • Gettysburg shot 50 percent (25-for-50) from the floor, including 35 percent (7-for-20) from three.
  • Ryan McKeon led the Bullets with 14 points. He also tallied eight rebounds, four blocks and three assists.
  • Rassoul Abakar registered a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

  • Salisbury has the week off before taking on the Rowan Profs on Saturday, Dec. 17.
  • Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Glassboro, N.J.
