HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Freshman Ryan Blakey (Accokeek, MD) scored a game-high and career-high 19 points off the bench to lead Hampden-Sydney College to an 87-53 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball road win at Eastern Mennonite University on Saturday afternoon in Harrisonburg. Junior Alex Elliott (Marietta, GA) added 11 points, while senior Ryan Clements (Conyers, GA) and junior Davidson Hubbard (Charlotte, NC) each had 10 points for the visiting Tigers (5-3, 3-0 ODAC), who led 49-20 at halftime en route to their third consecutive victory. DaiJordan Brown scored 14 points for the host Royals (3-5, 0-3 ODAC).
"We had a good couple of days of practice leading up to today's game," said fourth-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "Our scout team has been doing a phenomenal job of helping to prepare us each week and it showed today. Big road win!"
H-SC scored the first 11 points of the contest as Hubbard opened with a basket inside, Clements followed with a pair of layups sandwiched around a three-point field goal by junior DJ Wright (Greensboro, GA), before Hubbard added a slam dunk for the 11-0 margin at 16:44. EMU finally got on the scoreboard at 16:18, but the Tigers answered with seven-straight points to lead 18-2 at 14:53 after another layup from Clements—Wright adding another three-pointer and junior Josiah Hardy (Ashburn) scoring inside, as well. The visitors extended their lead to 32-8 at 9:00 following a steal and layup by Clements, and it was 39-15 after a three-pointer from sophomore Ayman McGowan (Memphis, TN) at 4:54. Blakey connected on yet another three-pointer to push the margin to 47-18 late in the half as the Garnet & Grey led 49-20 at the intermission.
H-SC maintained its comfortable advantage in the second half, taking its largest lead of the day at 62-28 with 12:55 on the clock following a three-pointer by sophomore Nick Shryock (Davidson, NC). EMU was able to close a little and get to within 64-40 at 8:21 after a trio of three-pointers. The Tigers, however, used a quick 10-6 run to lead 74-46 with 5:42 remaining after another three-pointer by Blakey, and the third three-pointer of the contest for Blakey had the visitors ahead 81-51 at 2:45. The two schools emptied their respective benches over the final four-plus minutes, and a highlight for the Garnet & Grey included three slam dunks by sophomore Rashaun Tomlin (Warner Robins, GA) over the final 4:22, with Blakey closing the scoring with a steal and layup with 43-seconds left to play.
Blakey led H-SC with his game-high and career-high 19 points off the bench, including 3-7 three-pointers, adding a career-high five steals. Elliott finished with 11 points and six rebounds for the Tigers. Clements and Hubbard each contributed 10 points, with Clements adding three assists and three steals. Wright (2-3 3 FGs) and Shryock (3-3 3FGs) each had nine points, the latter off the bench, while Tomlin added a career-high six points off the bench, as well, and junior Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) had four points, six assists and a game-high and career-high six steals. H-SC shot 51% (37-73) from the field, including 36% (10-28) on three-pointers, and 38% (3-8) at the free throw line.
Brown led EMU with his 14 points (3-7 3FGs), adding six rebounds. Mark Burkholder had 11 points (3-4 3FGs) and eight rebounds for the Royals. EMU shot 36% (17-47) from the field, including 38% (8-21) on three-pointers, and 65% (11-17) at the line.
