Dominant Second Half Pushes Royals to Win over Saints

HARRISONBURG, Va. – After trailing by eight at the break, the EMU men's basketball team came out in the second half and dominated. The Royals outscored Marymount by 21, to pick up an 80-67 win over the Saints.

Highlights

First Half

Julien Hagerman knocked down a three and Mark Burkholder had a layup to give EMU a 5-0 lead early. The Saints answered with 12 straight before Landon Swingler drilled a three to stop the Marymount run. The Saints continued to hold a lead, but EMU kept them in their sights with Michael Watlington and DaiJordan Brown adding buckets to pull EMU within one, 19-18. Myles McIntyre gave the Royals a brief lead before Marymount hit a three, a layup and a jumper to go back up by six. The Royals would get within one before MU ended the half on a 12-5 run to take the halftime lead.

Second Half

Out of the break, Aviwe Mahlong and Swingler pulled the Royals to within three but MU continued to hold a slim lead at the 14:24 mark. EMU then went on their own run, 11-0, to take an eight-point lead. The lead fluctuated between seven and 11 for EMU until, with the Royals ahead 69-62, a Mahlong layup, five straight from Swingler and a Watlington layup, gave the Royals a 14-point cushion and put the game out of reach.

Mahlong – 19 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists

Swingler – 16 points, 6 assists

What's Next

EMU will hit the road on Wednesday for an ODAC matchup against Washington and Lee. Tipoff against the Generals is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
