Salisbury powers past Penn State Altoona, 89-81

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University men's basketball defeated the Penn State Altoona Lions, 89-81, in a fast-paced and exciting Sunday matchup in Maggs PAC.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Both offenses came out firing, and with a two-point lead, 12-10, Brendan Davis knocked down a tough jumper and Greg Bloodsworth hit a triple to put the Sea Gulls up 17-10 at the 15:06 mark of the first half.
  • A few minutes later, Altoona tied the game back up at 21 after a made layup by Mason Bush.
  • Salisbury then went on a 7-1 run that was capped off by a Jordan Oates trey to make it 28-22 with just under eight minutes left in the half.
  • Another three from Oates capped off a 13-0 run for the Sea Gulls to make it 41-28 with 2:52 on the clock.
  • The Lions cut into the lead in the final minutes of the half with a 6-0 run to send the teams into halftime with a score of 43-35.
  • Altoona stayed hot coming out of halftime, and brought the game within two, 43-41, with just under 18 minutes to play.
  • The Sea Gulls remained steady and got back out to a seven-point lead, 53-46, after Craig took over and scored six of the next nine points for Salisbury.
  • The Lions continued to chip away and tied the game again at 59 with 10 minutes to play.
  • Kaiden Mines broke the tie with a deep three from the wing, which sparked a 12-1 run for the Sea Gulls to go up 71-60 at the 7:22 mark.
  • Altoona mounted another comeback over the next several minutes and found themselves down just four points, 81-77, after PJ Charles made a layup with 41 seconds left on the clock.
  • Bloodsworth drew a foul on the next possession to earn a trip to the charity stripe. A costly technical foul on the Lions awarded Bloodsworth two more free-throws. He knocked down all four attempts to go up 85-77 and ice the game for Salisbury.
  • Both teams added a few more scores in the waning moments and the game ended with a final score of 89-81.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES

  • Salisbury shot 50.7 percent (35-for-69) from the field, including 36.8 percent (7-for-19) from deep.
  • Brandon Craig and Greg Bloodsworth scored a game-high 22 points each. Craig added 10 rebounds to his line for his second double-double in a row and the third of the season.
  • Cameron Heard added 13 points on 6-for-8 shooting.
  • Jordan Oates scored 10 points and was two rebounds shy of a double-double.
  • Sean Carr chipped in 11 points off the bench with five rebounds.
  • Brendan Davis dished out a game-high six assists.
  • Salisbury won the battle on the glass and outrebounded Altoona, 37-33.

PENN STATE ALTOONA GAME NOTES

  • The Lions shot 53.1 percent (34-for-64) from the field, including 38.5 percent (5-for-13) from three.
  • PJ Charles registered a double-double after he scored a team-high 22 points and grabbed 10 boards.
  • Andruw Harman added 16 points and nine rebounds.
  • Alex McClellan scored 12 points, grabbed four boards, and dished out three assists.

UP NEXT

  • Salisbury begins a seven-game road stretch against Neumann on Saturday, Dec. 3.
  • Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Aston, Pa.
