HARTFORD, Conn. – Six-foot-eight inch junior Ben Callahan-Gold scored 24 of his game-high 29 points in his team's 51-point second half as Trinity College pulled away for an 86-71 non-conference men's basketball victory over Eastern Connecticut State University Tuesday evening at Ray Ooosting Gymnasium.
Trinity (2-0) outscored Eastern (2-3), 14-5, over the final five minutes of the first half to take an eight-point halftime lead, then broke the game open by keeping the Warriors scoreless from the floor over three minutes in a 12-1 burst that expanded a three-point lead to 14, 56-42, seven minutes into the second half. The Warriors missed five shots and turned the ball over once on seven possessions in that stretch.
Callahan-Gold had his team's first eight points in that 12-1 burst, scoring inside for two points, then converting a conventional three-point play and following with a three-point field goal that he set up himself with a defensive rebound.
Callahan-Gold and six-foot-six inch sophomore Sean Macarchuk combined for 39 of the Bantam's 51 second-half points. Callahan-Gold was 9-of-15 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the foul line over those final 20 minutes, and Macarchuk was 5-of-5 (all three-pointers) from the field.
Eastern shot less than 30 percent from the floor in the first half but trailed by only one with five minutes left before halftime, but gave up eight consecutive points and was outscored, 13-6 the rest of the way and trailed by eight at halftime.
Callahan-Gold was 11of-22 from the floor en rute to his game-high total of 29 points, with Macarchuk finishing 6-of-9 (all from "three") from the floor and totalling 18 points. Sophomore guard Will Dorion had 17 points and ten assists for Trinity.
Senior forward Quinton Lott (Bridgeport) posted his second double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds, with senior guard Max Lee (Norwich) grabbing 11 rebounds to go along with six points and four assists. Senior guard Tyreice Woods (Hartford) came off the bench for ten points, five assists and five rebounds and senior guard Jalen Williams (Simsbury) and first-year guard Dominick Dao (Terryville) each had 11 points.
Eastern visits Connecticut College in a non-conference game Sunday at 2 p.m.
