HENRIETTA, NY – Rochester men's basketball raced out to an early lead and held on late to defeat the Nazareth College Golden Flyers, 75-69, and sweep the Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout on Saturday at Clark Gymnasium.
For their efforts over the crosstown shootout, Ryan Algier was named the Tournament MVP, and Ross Gang was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Logan Blankenberg got the scoring started for the Golden Flyers with his layup 31 seconds into the first half, but Nazareth wouldn't score another bucket for nearly six minutes, as Rochester held the Golden Flyers without another bucket until the 13:53 mark.
Over the next 4:50, beginning with Gang's jumper at the 19:19 mark, the Yellowjackets scored 15-straight points, including 11 from Algier. The graduate student made five-straight layups over a two-and-a-half minute stretch before his triple put UR up 13-2 with 15:36 to play in the first.
C.J. Amsellem then capped off the 15-0 run with a jumper, before Nazareth finally got back on the scoreboard with back-to-back threes from Jordan Haggard, cutting UR's lead to 15-8.
The Yellowjackets kept scoring though, with two-straight layups from T.C. Price to put UR up 19-10, followed by Algier's second of three made three-pointers to put Rochester up 12.
The Golden Flyers would whittle away at UR's lead, cutting it down to single digits on another Haggard three with 6:56 left in the half, but Matt Wiele brought it back out to 10, 28-18, with a layup, before Logan Jagodinski sank a triple off Amir Basma's assist to make it a 31-18 Rochester lead.
The 'Jackets led by as many as 14 in the final moments of the first half following layups from Algier and Jagodzinski, before Zach Stenglein's layup sent UR into halftime with a 39-27 lead.
Rochester shot an absurd 60.0 percent (18-for-30) from the field in the first half, led by Algier's 18 first-half points.
UR then quickly brought its lead out to 18, its largest of the game, on Algier's third triple to start the second half, going up 42-27 with 18:24 to play.
But the Golden Flyers answered with a run of their own, coming back over the next six minutes with a 16-4 run to pull within three, 46-43, on Jaylen Savage's jumper with 11:56 remaining.
Eight Savage points highlighted Nazareth's run, as the Golden Flyers held UR to just two field goals and six shots over the stretch, forcing Rochester to spend a timeout.
With their lead cut to just three, the Yellowjackets responded with a run of their own, locking down the Golden Flyers for 2:49 as they outscored Nazareth, 8-3, over the nearly three minutes stretch to increase their lead back to eight.
Dan Masino's layup with 11:28 to play broke the scoreless stretch, while back-to-back layups by Wiele brought UR's lead out to six, 52-46, with 9:26 left.
But Nazareth continued their push, with two Blankenburg threes, and pulling back within a possession on Luke Insley's jumper with 5:31 to play.
Amsellem answered Insley's jumper with one of his own, while Gang converted an and-one opportunity with just about four minutes left to stretch Rochester's lead out to seven.
From there, the two sides went cold for nearly a minute and a half, until Algier knocked down a free throw with 2:49 to play to put UR up eight.
Blankenberg scored a quick four points to pull Nazareth within four, but Algier scored a layup on the other end to send UR into the final minute up by six.
Down six, the Golden Flyers were forced to foul, and Mitchell Kershner started things off for UR, going 1-for-2 at the line.
Zach Stenglein sank a three to again pull the Golden Flyers within four, 68-64, with 35 seconds to play, but Gang hit six free throws down the stretch, sealing the victory with two at the line after Nazareth pulled within three, 72-69, on Stenglein's layup with eight seconds left.
Masino would then add one more at the line for UR, finishing off the 75-69 victory.
Rochester remains undefeated, moving to 5-0 with the win, while Nazareth drops to 3-1 with the loss.
Algier led Rochester with 28 points, shooting 68.8 percent from the floor and adding a team-high eight rebounds and two blocks. Gang joined Algier in double figures with 15 points, shooting 9-for-11 from the free throw line to go along with eight assists.
Defensively, four 'Jackets tallied a steal, while Price also notched two blocks.
As a team, Rochester shot 53.8 percent, holding the Golden Flyers to 39.4 percent shooting.
The Yellowjackets will next make the short trip to Geneva, NY for a Thanksgiving-week matchup against Hobart College on Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 8 p.m.
