Case Western Reserve University senior forward Cole Frilling and graduate student guard Danny Frauenheim each recorded double-doubles on Wednesday night to lead the 19th-ranked Spartans to an 88-81 win over La Roche University at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland, Ohio.
With the win, the Spartans improved to 4-0 overall on the season. It is just the second time in team history that CWRU has won each of its first four games in a season, and the first time since the 1990-91 campaign.
La Roche fell to 0-4 on the year following the loss.
Frilling recorded his fourth-straight double-double to start the season, finishing with 22 points and a season-high 11 rebounds on nine-of-23 shooting overall, including three-of-seven from long range. He added three assists, three steals, and a block in the game. Frauenheim scored all 12 of his points in the second half, adding a season-high 11 assists and five rebounds.
Sophomore guard Sam Trunley came off the bench to score a career-high 18 points, shooting six-of-10 overall and five-of-eight from behind the three-point line. Sophomore forward Umar Rashid also notched a career-high with 18 points while blocking three shots and collecting six rebounds. Junior guard Luke Thorburn added 12 points in the game.
The Spartans fell behind early before Trunley emerged from the bench to provide instant offense for the team. With the team trailing 14-8 at the 15:19 mark, Trunley knocked down back-to-back threes and hit a free throw after being fouled on the second one to give CWRU the lead. Frilling then knocked down a layup before Trunley capped off a 12-0 Spartan run with his third three in just over two minutes, putting the Spartans ahead 20-14. The Redhawks remained close and took a 29-26 lead with 5:11 left in the first half, but another three by Trunley evened the score, and a jumper by Rashid with 4:35 remaining gave CWRU the advantage. The Spartans closed out the first half with a 46-37 lead on a three at the buzzer by Rashid.
The Redhawks continued to keep within striking distance and tied the game at 65-65 with 8:38 remaining in the contest, but CWRU responded with a 10-0 run to go ahead 75-65 with 5:23 to play. The Spartans took a game-high 12-point lead, 85-73, on a pair of free throws by Frauenheim with 1:39 left, before closing out the seven-point win.
CWRU finished the game shooting a season-high 51.5% from the floor and 42.3% from three-point range.
The Spartans are scheduled to be back in action this weekend at the Community Health Center of Buffalo Classic in Buffalo, New York, as the team will aim for the first 5-0 start ever in program history. CWRU is set to open play at the tournament against host Buffalo State on Friday, November 18 at 6:00 p.m.
